There is little doubt that San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh will be among the top names to watch when NFL teams begin filling head coaching vacancies during the upcoming offseason. Saleh, however, has repeatedly insisted that his focus remains squarely on the 49ers and their postseason push.
Saleh reiterated that mindset recently in a conversation with ESPN's Nick Wagoner, emphasizing that while he still aspires to be a head coach, he is in no rush to leave San Francisco.
"Everyone wants to be at the top of their profession, and they want to succeed at that just to see how far they can go and what they can achieve," Saleh said. "Is my desire to get to the top of the profession and hoist the Lombardi one day? Absolutely. Am I in a hurry? No, I love it here."
Saleh added, "Obviously, the desire is there, but at the same time, it's not desperation."
The 49ers clinched a playoff berth Sunday following the Pittsburgh Steelers' win over the Detroit Lions, ensuring their season will extend beyond Week 18. While San Francisco's defense has experienced some inconsistency during Saleh's return—currently ranked No. 18 in total defense, No. 12 against the run, and No. 23 against the pass—the unit has been hit hard by injuries, including the loss of stars Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.
Even so, Saleh's reputation as one of the NFL's respected defensive minds continues to bolster his chances of landing another top job.
"Most of us—I don't know if every coach does—but we all want to get to the top of our profession," Saleh told Josina Anderson earlier this month. "But honestly, honest, Jo, I'm just in this space right now where I'm solely focused on trying to do my best for the guys here.
"It's not a secret. We all want to be at the top of our profession and show that we can achieve greatness at the top of our profession, but—and I say this with great humility—my focus is here, and just trying our best to get to the playoffs and see if we can make some damage and host a Super Bowl here in our building."
Saleh is in his second stint as the 49ers' defensive coordinator, having previously held the role from 2017 to 2020. He later served as the New York Jets' head coach before spending part of last season as an offensive consultant with the Green Bay Packers—after the Jets fired him.
Looking back on his time with the Jets, Saleh sees it as an opportunity for growth.
"We didn't do a good enough job, and the owner decided that it was time to move on, and so that's what it is," Saleh told ESPN. "That's where I've got to look inward and see what we could have done better, and those are the things that I've been trying to learn from those experiences, so if that opportunity presents itself again, I'll be more prepared."
