San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch didn't sound particularly optimistic Tuesday morning when discussing wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's chances of returning this season. Appearing on Bay Area radio station KNBR, Lynch emphasized that while he remains hopeful, he can't say Aiyuk's return is realistic.
"Realistic? I'm not sure," Lynch said. "Hopeful? Yeah. So, I think that's kind of where I'd leave that."
Aiyuk continues rehabbing from the ACL and MCL injuries he suffered in October 2024. The 49ers have not yet deemed him healthy enough to open his practice window, and with only four regular-season games left, the chances to activate him are rapidly shrinking.
Lynch's comments prompted the same question for head coach Kyle Shanahan, who also joined KNBR on Tuesday. He was asked whether he still believes Aiyuk could return this season.
"Oh, I'm definitely still hopeful," Shanahan said. "I'm not counting on it, but I'm definitely still hoping that can happen."
For now, it appears the 49ers are preparing to finish the season without Aiyuk taking another snap. Anything more than that would be viewed as a bonus.
Aiyuk's long-term future with the team is also uncertain. In July, the 49ers voided the receiver's guaranteed money for 2026—a move the organization has not fully explained. Though some believe it points toward an impending split between team and player.
A recent ESPN report suggested the decision may have—at least partially—stemmed from Aiyuk failing to attend offseason rehab appointments.
During his radio interview, Lynch was asked whether the report of the contract adjustment further strained the relationship or communication with Aiyuk.
"I don't necessarily know that the reporting was an inflection point, but I think, the entire time, it hadn't been great," Lynch admitted. "And so, you do your best to rectify those things, and then, everyone's got to be professionals and conduct themselves in that manner."
