The San Francisco 49ers have finally reached their long-awaited bye week—a break that felt like it might never arrive. After grinding through an injury-plagued 2025 campaign and securing a crucial 26-8 win against the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field, the 49ers can now take a much-needed pause.
The team will fly back to the Bay Area tonight before reporting to the facility on Monday for their standard day-after-game review. A workout is expected on Tuesday, after which players will be dismissed for several days of rest.
This marks the latest bye week Kyle Shanahan has experienced as a coach. The Week 14 break leaves just four regular-season games remaining, but Shanahan believes the 9-4 49ers are in an excellent position given the adversity they've faced.
"I love where we're at right now," Shanahan said. "I believe we'd be in the playoffs today if it started, and we've got four more games left to make sure we continue that. It's been a long wait for a bye week. I've never had one this late. I don't know anyone on our team who has. It's finally here.
"Mentally and physically, it'll be awesome to rest, and then be able to come back from that with four games to play for a chance to get in the playoffs is everything we could ask for."
Quarterback Brock Purdy, who missed significant time early in the season with a turf toe injury, has now played three straight games and echoed Shanahan's confidence.
"Every game is so huge," Purdy said. "You've got to find momentum throughout every game, and it doesn't matter what you've done in the past, good or bad. It's about the next game. We're obviously 9-4. We've got a bye, which is great for us to be able to heal up and feel good, but we've got to have the same mindset, come the end of next week, when we get back, ready to game-plan for our next game.
"And so, that mindset, we can't lose it. Every game matters. It's huge. This is the most important time of the year, for sure, but we've just got to take it one day at a time, one game at a time, and keep building our momentum."
Tight end George Kittle couldn't help but laugh when a reporter suggested the team had been waiting forever for this bye.
"We have been," Kittle said. "A Week 14 bye is crazy."
Kittle noted that few would have believed the 49ers would enter the bye with nine wins after losing cornerstone players like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, and after stars such as Kittle himself and Purdy missed time.
"I think a lot of people would have laughed at everybody," Kittle said. "Kudos to our coaching staff, Coach Shanahan, [GM John] Lynch for bringing in the right guys to fill in those spots, developing players to take advantage of those situations."
Kittle went on to praise teammates like defensive end Clelin Ferrell—a recent arrival—for stepping up this season.
Looking ahead, the 49ers understand the challenge that awaits. After facing the Tennessee Titans in Week 15, they'll close the season against the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, and Seattle Seahawks—all potential playoff contenders.
"It's fantastic. I think we're set up really well," Kittle added. "These bye weeks get tricky because I think guys have just been looking forward to it. And so, our message, I think Kyle's going to say the message message tomorrow is just like, 'Hey, get away, do whatever you have to do, but just remember, when we come back, we have four incredibly difficult games that are going to hopefully set us up to do something fun after the last game.'"
Running back Christian McCaffrey is equally relieved to finally reach the break, knowing that he and his teammates will finally have an opportunity to rest, recharge, and prepare for a strong finish.
"Yeah, I can't believe it's here," McCaffrey said. "I felt like, for a while, it just wasn't going to come. So, yeah, it's nice to get some rest."
McCaffrey remains focused on the day-to-day but likes the team's trajectory. He added, "I love our character, I love our urgency, and I like where we're at."
