How PFF graded shaky Brock Purdy, 49ers in prime-time Week 12 win vs. Panthers

The 49ers came away with a 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football, but it wasn’t without a few scares along the way. Their PFF grades show where they shined, and struggled. Quarterback Brock Purdy, who historically has been accurate in passes 10-to-19 yards downfield, turned the ball over on three different occasions with throws at that distance. Purdy shared postgame that if he had to do it all over again, he would make the same decisions to throw, but just with more accuracy. “Honestly, the decisions of going to those spots I was fine with,” Purdy said. “It’s just the execution of throwing a better ball. I feel like on really all of them, I needed to just drive the ball a little bit more and I kept it up in the air too long on multiple of them. But again, that’s on me. “I thought our receivers did a great job of getting separation and winning and so it’s just execution-wise, I’ve got to throw the ball more on a line and put it there.”In the second half of the game, Purdy did rein it in, with a much shorter depth of target of 3.4 yards as opposed to the first half where his average throw traveled 7.8 yards per attempt. Purdy only completed one of his seven attempts of 10-yards-or-more downfield for 25 yards, three interceptions and a 2.4 passer rating. Purdy’s completion rating on passes 10-to-19 yards downfield over his career: 2022 – 80.3 percent 2023 – 65.7 percent 2024 – 65.3 percent 2025 – 52.2 percent (57.9 percent prior to last night)On attempts of nine yards or fewer, Purdy was much more accurate, completing 22 of his 24 attempts for 168 yards, one touchdown and a 109.7 passer rating. Monday night was the first game where Purdy did not complete at least two passes of 10 or more yards downfield. OffenseThe offensive line allowed eight pressures, none of which were sacks:LT Trent Williams – three hurries LG Spencer Burford – one hit LG Ben Bartch – one hurry C Jake Brendel – two hurries RG Dominick Puni – one hurry RT Colton McKivitz – no pressures Running back Christian McCaffrey was on the field for 58 offensive plays and racked up 31 touches — 24 carries and seven receptions. The All-Pro was responsible for nine first downs — five rushing and four receiving. Of McCaffrey’s 53 receiving yards, 50 of them came after the catch and 50 of his 89 rushing yards came after contact.Wide receiver Jauan Jennings caused a league-high four missed tackles on his five receptions, three of which were for a first down or touchdown.Tight end George Kittle caught six of his 10 targets for 78 yards, 44 of which came after the catch. The All-Pro also was responsible for four first downs. DefenseSafety Ji’Ayir Brown earned the highest marks on the defense with a 91.6 overall grade. Brown registered six total tackles, including two stops and two interceptions. Brown allowed two catches on his two targets, but for only 15 yards. Cornerback Upton Stout received a career-high 82.2 overall grade, and the second highest on the defense. The rookie recorded six total tackles, one quarterback hurry, and allowed three catches on five targets for just 22 yards as well as one pass defensed.Safety Malik Mustapha received the third-highest grade on the defense as a result of his seven solo tackles (one missed), including four stops. The safety also allowed three receptions for only three yards. Quarterback pressures – 14 total Bryce Huff – two hits, three hurries Clelin Ferrell – one sack, two hurries Kalia Davis – two hurries Sam Okuayinonu – one hurry Upton Stout – one hurry CJ West – one hurry Keion White – one hurry Missed tackles – eight total LB Curtis Robinson – threeS Jason Pinnock – twoS Malik Mustapha – one DL Sam Okiuayinonu – one DL Bryce Huff – one Robert Saleh’s game plan was to close the pocket on Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, in an attempt to obstruct his view of the field. The defensive coordinator called for blitzes on 10 of the quarterback’s dropbacks, or 29.4 percent on which Young completed three of his eight attempts for 14 yards, one interception and a 6.3 passer rating. Purdy wasn’t the only one who struggled with passes 10 yards or more downfield. Young only completed two of his nine attempts for 43 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 44.4 passer rating.
