Regular kicker Eddy Piñeiro suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals and is considered week-to-week. With the 49ers preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Monday night, the team will need a replacement to handle kicking duties.
The Cleveland Browns selected York in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has appeared in games for the Browns, Washington Commanders, and Cincinnati Bengals, converting 33 of 45 career field-goal attempts.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Gay in the fifth round in 2019. He has played for the Los Angeles Rams, Indianapolis Colts, and Commanders—the latter released him on Monday. Gay has made 178 of 212 field-goal attempts over his seven NFL seasons.
