Brock Purdy nearing 49ers return, could serve as Mac Jones’ backup QB vs. Giants

SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Brock Purdy appears to be nearing a return to the 49ers’ starting lineup.But Mac Jones will start on Sunday against the New York Giants, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday.Jones is set to make his seventh start for the 49ers this season — and his fifth in a row — but Purdy could suit up this weekend as the team’s No. 2 quarterback.Purdy officially is listed as questionable for the 49ers’ game Sunday against the Giants. Shanahan said he is keeping the door open for Purdy to be available to play.Because Jones took the bulk of the practice snaps as Purdy saw his workload increase this week, the team determined Jones is in the best position to start against the Giants.Purdy is still not all the way back from his toe injury, Shanahan said. But he is moving closer toward being the No. 2 quarterback against the Giants. If Purdy suits up, Adrian Martinez would serve as the emergency No. 3 quarterback.Purdy originally sustained an injury described as turf toe in the 49ers’ first game of the season.
