49ers QB Brock Purdy, Demarcus Robinson building chemistry at training camp

SANTA CLARA — Quarterback Brock Purdy aired it out on Thursday, and he did not come up short&period;Purdy connected with veteran wide receiver Demarcus Robinson for the play of the day&period; Purdy heaved a deep ball to Robinson, who beat the coverage of cornerback Darrell Luter and hauled in the pass 45 yards down the field&period;“Brock, when he gets the look and it’s there, he rarely misses it,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said&period; “I’ve been happy with him&period; He got a few opportunities that he’s come up short on, but he got a good one today and he’s had a few throughout camp&period;”Robinson, Russell Gage and rookie Jordan Watkins have been the 49ers’ top wide receivers during practices this summer as the team has been shorthanded due to injuries&period;There is no timetable for Brandon Aiyuk’s return from ACL surgery&period; And Jauan Jennings is out indefinitely with a calf injury that he aggravated during practice on Sunday&period;The 49ers are being cautious with Ricky Pearsall, who is coming back from a hamstring condition&period;The team is also battling a depth problem at cornerback&period;The 49ers went with Luter and Dallis Flowers at cornerback while starters Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green sat out another day of work&period;Lenoir missed his second day with hip irritation&period; Shanahan said Lenoir will be out for at least the next two practices as he deals with his condition&period; Green is not expected back for another two weeks due to a hamstring injury&period;Here are other notes and observations from 49ers practice:— Greg Joseph appeared to have the better day, as the 49ers’ kicker competition continued&period; Joseph clearly made each of his four field-goal attempts, connecting from 33, 37, 43 and 54 yards&period; Moody made his first three kicks, but the fourth was too close to call&period; He either missed wide right or barely snuck it inside the upright&period; Kicker Competition 2025:Jake Moody and Greg Joseph attempted field goals of 33, 37, 43 and 54 from the same hashmarks&period; Joseph was definitely 4-for-4&period; Moody’s 54–yarder was either wide right or barely snuck in&period; — Matt Maiocco (&commat;MaioccoNBCS) July 31, 2025 — Rookie RB Jordan James has knee issues that kept him out of practice&period; Shanahan said James will be re-evaluated throughout the next week&period; James’ possible extended absence is likely why the 49ers signed veteran running back Ameer Abdullah&period;— The 49ers cut two receivers and signed two receivers&period; The team added Andy Isabella and Marquez Callaway and cut Equanimeous St&period; Brown and Malik Knowles&period; The 49ers also cut safety Jaylen Mahoney&period;— Left tackle Trent Williams, running back Christian McCaffrey, fullback Kyle Juszczyk and defensive end Nick Bosa had the day off from 49ers practice&period; The veterans are on a schedule that includes frequent rest days to keep them fresh throughout the summer, leading into the regular season&period;— Carter Bradley is not just the son of 49ers defensive assistant coach Gus Bradley&period; He is also a quarterback who is now competing for a spot on the 49ers’ roster&period; The 49ers signed Bradley to a contract on Thursday&period;Bradley spent time on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad last year&period; During the preseason, he completed 17 of 34 pass attempts for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception&period; Bradley impressed during a workout on Wednesday&period; He is competing with Tanner Mordecai to be the No&period; 3 quarterback behind Purdy and Mac Jones&period;“We have some roster issues, so we wouldn’t do it (sign another quarterback) unless he has a legit shot, and we feel like he does, just watching him work out yesterday and watching his film,” Shanahan said&period;— Ben Bartch was removed from the active/non-football injury list and took first-team reps with the 49ers’ offense at left guard&period; Nick Zakelj had been working with the No&period; 1 offense while Bartch was out with his quad injury&period;“There’s a competition, definitely, one that we’re excited to see,” Shanahan said&period;— The offensive line dominated the one-on-one pass-rush drills&period; The defensive lineman who had the best day was undrafted rookie Sebastian Valdez, as he beat 49ers draft pick Connor Colby a couple of times&period;— Second-round draft pick Alfred Collins could not get much going in his reps, as he was locked up on his pass-rush attempts against 49ers offensive linemen Matt Hennessy, Drew Moss, Zakelj and Zack Johnson&period; Collins, at 6-foot-5, 332 pounds, appears to be playing too upright, allowing offensive linemen to get under his pads in order to gain leverage&period;Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast
