49ers camp takeaways: Offense sharp; Odum makes most of opportunities

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers opened up their third block of training camp practices on Friday with a packed house of fans. Brock Purdy had a second straight practice without an interception during the session, which Kyle Shanahan deemed a little bit shorter than what is to come. The plan is to have a higher count of team reps on Saturday as they ramp up slowly towards the regular season. Nick Bosa and Christian McCaffrey both took veteran rest days and were not seen on the field. Jauan Jennings participated in individual drills but the head coach shared that the wideout was dealing with a minor ankle injury and should return soon. Logan Thomas was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. Jon Feliciano was back in the mix on the offensive line but worked in only during a few series of offensive plays. Aaron Banks was sidelined due to back spasms while Spencer Burford remained sidelined with a broken hand. Shanahan gave the update that Burford will not need surgery but will still miss a few weeks because of the injury. Here are five updates from Day 8 of 49ers training camp. Kickoff returns will be interesting The 49ers had everyone from Kyle Juszczyk to Deebo Samuel to Danny Gray attempting to return kickoffs on Friday. Even Terique Owens took a shot at catching the line-drive punt from kicker Jake Moody. Shanahan, who watched a few reps from the Thursday night Hall of Fame game, believes it will be a work in progress throughout the preseason and maybe even into Week 1. "We are all trying to learn," Shanahan said. "That was the first time everyone got to see it. I think I saw three of eight. It was messy but I'm sure they will be through the preseason. We will get as much info as we can on it and adjust as the year goes. Pearsall continues to progress and impress The rookie wide receiver didn't catch a pass during team drills but consistently showed follow-through during run plays. With the importance of wideouts blocking in Shanahan's offensive scheme, the head coach is appreciative of Pearsall's commitment to the game. "I've been really happy with his progress so far," Shanahan said. "It's been cool watching him in the run game. He understands our standards. He's not someone we have to call and say, 'We need more.' He gets it and he's doing everything he can and just continue to get more reps" Odum taking advantage of opportunities The special teams ace could be the player who gets the call to start on defense along side of second-year safety Ji'Ayir Brown if Talanoa Hufanga is not ready to play by Week 1. Odum has taken the majority of the snaps with the first team on defense while making stand-out plays. The undrafted free agent from Central Arkansas has had a number of pass breakups as well as one of the four interceptions of Purdy during Tuesday's practice. Offense nearly had turnover-free day During team drills in the latter half of Friday's session, a handoff from Purdy to Jordan Mason went awry. It was not clear from the other side of the field if the mistake was the fault of the quarterback or that ball carrier. The blame for the fumble was of no concern to Javon Hargrave,tak who scooped up the ball and ran it back for a defensive score. Moody a little off his game The second-year kicker has been exceptionally accurate throughout training camp missing only one prior kick. Maybe it was the myriad of line-drive kick-offs that Moody had practiced prior but after making two field goal attempts earlier, the Michigan product was not as accurate. Just prior to the end of practice Moody missed two attempts from both 46 and 53 yards away. The club will reconvene on Saturday for a lengthier session with extended team drills.
