Brandon Staley: Reset with 49ers has been energizing

May 23, 2024 at 4:00 AM

After Brandon Staley was fired as the Chargers head coach late last season, he found himself on the list of candidates for a number of defensive coordinator jobs but did not land any of them. The 49ers were one of the teams he interviewed with and they offered him a different job on Kyle Shanahan's staff. The 49ers confirmed this week that the title is assistant head coach/defense and Staley spoke to reporters for the first time in his new role on Wednesday. Nick Sorenson is the coordinator and Shanahan said Staley knows that and is on the staff because "he can help us in a number of roles" that include being a sounding board for Sorenson. That's a big change for Staley, but he said that he doesn't "think looking at it as a reset is a bad thing" because of how well he fits with Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch. "Talking to Kyle and John, there is a lot of common ground in how to lead a football team," Staley said, via Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News. "That is what I was looking for more than anything, an opportunity where you feel you'll be aligned with the right people who do things the right way and you have a chance to improve, and where you also have a chance to...

49ers' Brock Purdy: Full offseason has been beneficial

By David Bonilla
Jun 10

Brock Purdy's last full offseason came as a rookie in 2022. However, calling it a "full offseason" is misleading. He was buried on the San Francisco 49ers' depth chart, limiting his practice reps. Despite this, Purdy showed enough promise to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Just months later, he took over the starting quarterback job and hasn't relinquished it since. Last offseason was crucial for Purdy's development. Unfortunately, he was recovering from surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. Purdy didn't get to throw to teammates until training camp, leaving some uncertainty about his effectiveness following such a significant injury. Purdy finished last season with a single-season franchise-record 4,280 passing yards,

Houshmandzadeh: Brandon Aiyuk has 'pessimistic outlook' regarding 49ers extension

By David Bonilla
Jun 7

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk seem far apart in their contract extension negotiations. Aiyuk often works with TJ Houshmandzadeh during the offseason, and the former NFL wide receiver joined Bay Area radio station 95.7 The Game this week to provide an update on the situation (h/t Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area). The Minnesota Vikings recently signed their star wideout, Justin Jefferson, to a deal worth up to $35 million annually. However, Houshmandzadeh acknowledges that Aiyuk should not expect to earn anything near that range. This deal is unlikely to impact Aiyuk's contract negotiations. It's just a

Maiocco less confident 49ers will get a deal done with Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Jun 11

The San Francisco 49ers have had success signing their big-name players to contract extensions in recent years, securing deals with George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa. However, that last one didn't get finalized until dangerously close to the start of the regular season. This year, the team has been trying to get a deal done with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. While the 49ers were confident early on, given their successful track record, that a deal would be reached, the two sides reportedly remain far apart in negotiations. Last week, Michael Silver of the San Francisco

George Kittle reveals text message to Brandon Aiyuk amid contract talks with 49ers

By David Bonilla
Jun 12

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are reportedly far apart in their negotiations for a contract extension. Both sides would love to reach a long-term deal, but it is proving more difficult than team decision-makers initially thought. Tight end George Kittle went through his own contract negotiations in 2020, signing a five-year, $75 million deal during training camp. Naturally, during an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show," Kittle was asked if he has had any discussions with Aiyuk during this process and if any advice has been extended. "In all honesty, this is how I have treated all my teammates that go through contract negotiations. I shoot him a text,"
