Why 49ers receivers coach sees good, bad in Aiyuk, Jennings’ OTAs absence

May 22, 2024 at 8:20 PM

SANTA CLARA — The absence of Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings at OTAs is viewed as both a good and bad thing by 49ers receivers coach Leonard Hankerson. Without two of the team's top three receivers on the field, first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall is getting a higher number of valuable reps that might be more limited if Aiyuk and Jennings were present. "It's awesome," Hankerson said. "Both good and bad I would say. Reason why is it's good for Ricky is because he's getting a ton of reps, but also bad, because that's two guys who know how we do things, know how it's done the right way." Coach Kyle Shanahan asks a lot from wideouts in his system - not only getting separation while catching the ball but responsibilities in run blocking as well. Watching veterans who have been in the system for multiple seasons is important for rookies like Pearsall, Jacob Cowing and Terique Owens. "[Pearsall] is not able to see those guys do it, so that's an added rep that he's not able to learn," Hankerson said. "The reps help a lot. The more we rep things with him, with Jake, with Terique, with any of the guys, the better they will be at it." Still, the wide receivers coach has been happy with...

Why 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk playing on 5th-year option intrigues Jeremy Fowler

By David Bonilla
Jun 10

Brandon Aiyuk probably wants to avoid playing on his fifth-year option. Although it would earn him $14.124 million in 2024, it is far below his market value. Similarly, the San Francisco 49ers likely want to avoid approaching the $30 million annual salary that might end the wide receiver's holdout. Last week, Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reported what was likely the 49ers' latest offer to Aiyuk, stating, "I'm hearing maybe their offer's in the $26 million range, which, you know, it's certainly not Justin Jefferson money, nor should it be, but it's closer to that DeVonta Smith, Amon-Ra St. Brown, that next tier down." Suppose the two sides can't reach a mutually

49ers coach explains why Armstead-replacement Maliek Collins is a perfect D-line fit

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers faced a tough financial decision this offseason. Unable to negotiate a salary reduction with defensive tackle Arik Armstead, who had struggled with injuries in recent years, the team decided to part ways with the longtime Niner. To mitigate the loss of Armstead, the 49ers traded a seventh-round draft pick to the Houston Texans for defensive tackle Maliek Collins. San Francisco's defensive line coach, Kris Kocurek, recently discussed the addition of Collins and what he likes about the defensive lineman. "I really liked him coming out of Nebraska — just the explosion that he can generate through his lower body," Kocurek told

Maiocco less confident 49ers will get a deal done with Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Jun 11

The San Francisco 49ers have had success signing their big-name players to contract extensions in recent years, securing deals with George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa. However, that last one didn't get finalized until dangerously close to the start of the regular season. This year, the team has been trying to get a deal done with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. While the 49ers were confident early on, given their successful track record, that a deal would be reached, the two sides reportedly remain far apart in negotiations. Last week, Michael Silver of the San Francisco

George Kittle reveals text message to Brandon Aiyuk amid contract talks with 49ers

By David Bonilla
Jun 12

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are reportedly far apart in their negotiations for a contract extension. Both sides would love to reach a long-term deal, but it is proving more difficult than team decision-makers initially thought. Tight end George Kittle went through his own contract negotiations in 2020, signing a five-year, $75 million deal during training camp. Naturally, during an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show," Kittle was asked if he has had any discussions with Aiyuk during this process and if any advice has been extended. "In all honesty, this is how I have treated all my teammates that go through contract negotiations. I shoot him a text,"
