49ers RBs coach Turner notes CMC’s OTAs absence is ‘business part’

May 22, 2024 at 5:00 PM

SANTA CLARA — Christian McCaffrey, a constant fixture during the 49ers' offseason program, was notably absent from the 49ers' Tuesday on-field OTA practice. But running backs coach Bobby Turner isn't worried about the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year's whereabouts, though, reading between the lines, might suggest that there is more to the story. "Physically," Turner told NBC Sports Bay Area. "Physically he's not here, but he's here in every other aspect. That's the business part, and I'm not getting into that." McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension with the Carolina Panthers in 2020, giving him the highest annual salary for an NFL running back. The All-Pro's $11.8 million salary in 2024 still is one of the highest in the league at his position, but in comparison to his offensive counterparts, the Stanford product might find it, well ... offensive. Deebo Samuel is set to earn nearly $21 million in 2024 while Brandon Aiyuk will make $14.1 million. For the contributions that McCaffrey makes to the offense, it's understandable that the ball carrier would want more stability and a bigger paycheck. Yet, the NFL's running back market still is soft....

49ers insider: 'Ricky Pearsall just looks the part'

By David Bonilla
Jun 7

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area observed both of the San Francisco 49ers' minicamp practices this week and got a good look at wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. The rookie appears to be acclimating well to his new team and the NFL, leaving the 49ers insider impressed. The 49ers boast a talented wide receiver room, including Brandon Aiyuk (assuming he reports to the team soon), Deebo Samuel, and the recently extended fan favorite, Jauan Jennings. Adding Pearsall with the No. 31 overall draft pick only boosts the potential productivity of this group. "What Pearsall brings to the table is he's more like Aiyuk than he is like Samuel," Maiocco said this week on the "49ers Talk" podcast. "He's a good route runner, good hands, he can beat man coverage, all those things

By David Bonilla
Jun 12

The San Francisco 49ers faced a tough financial decision this offseason. Unable to negotiate a salary reduction with defensive tackle Arik Armstead, who had struggled with injuries in recent years, the team decided to part ways with the longtime Niner. To mitigate the loss of Armstead, the 49ers traded a seventh-round draft pick to the Houston Texans for defensive tackle Maliek Collins. San Francisco's defensive line coach, Kris Kocurek, recently discussed the addition of Collins and what he likes about the defensive lineman. "I really liked him coming out of Nebraska — just the explosion that he can generate through his lower body," Kocurek told

49ers coach sends clear message about kicker Jake Moody

By David Bonilla
Jun 12

San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody had some crucial misses during his rookie campaign, but he still connected on 21 of his 25 field goal attempts during the regular season. He missed a field goal attempt in each of the 49ers' first two playoff games last season but connected on all three of his attempts in the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs. Moody briefly set a Super Bowl record with a 55-yard field goal. However, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker later set a new record, connecting on a 57-yard kick. Moody's postseason miscues were foreshadowed by a shaky Week 18 performance against the Los Angeles Rams when he missed a field goal attempt and an extra point. While that missed extra point was his first of the season, the kicker went on to miss another in
