The San Francisco 49ers kicked off organized team activities (OTAs) this week, and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was the most noticeable absentee. However, his absence wasn't unexpected. Aiyuk and the 49ers reportedly remain far apart in their contract extension negotiations, and this portion of the offseason remains voluntary.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked how he feels about Aiyuk not being around for OTAs.

"The same as I do about all these guys that aren't here," Shanahan responded. "I mean, I wish they were here, but it's something that's part of the business. Anytime it's part the business part, you try to respect it, stay out of it as much as possible, and look forward to the days when we can just focus on football."

One player who would benefit significantly from Aiyuk's presence is quarterback Brock Purdy. This is his first full offseason with the team. The 24-year-old didn't get many practice reps as a rookie in 2022 as he tried to make the 53-man roster as a backup. Last year, Purdy spent the offseason recovering from surgery and didn't get to throw to his teammates until training camp.

Purdy was asked how important it is to resolve the Aiyuk situation so the receiver can get back on the practice field.

"I think it's extremely important," Purdy declared. "He's a playmaker, love throwing to him, love B.A. as a person. So, yeah, it's definitely important. I've said this before: it's out of my control. But for me, I'm showing up every day trying to get better with the new guys, and the guys that are here, and that is what it is. But hopefully, it gets settled soon."

Purdy admitted that he was nervous during the draft when trade rumors were swirling as the media speculated about the futures of Aiyuk and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The quarterback hopes to keep both of his offensive weapons on the roster.

"The draft is going on, and obviously, you're excited to get guys that you're drafting," Purdy shared. "But at the same time, it's like, 'Dang, dude, we could have some kind of trade stuff happen.' But like I said, all that's out of my control. I was sort of just sitting there, waiting to see what our team was going to do and everything.

"And my job is to show up and rip it to the open guy and try to win games, so that's my mindset with it. But I do love my boys, and I obviously hope that we can all continue to play together."

Maiocco less confident 49ers will get a deal done with Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers have had success signing their big-name players to contract extensions in recent years, securing deals with George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, and Nick Bosa. However, that last one didn't get finalized until dangerously close to the start of the regular season. This year, the team has been trying to get a deal done with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. While the 49ers were confident early on, given their successful track record, that a deal would be reached, the two sides reportedly remain far apart in negotiations. Last week, Michael Silver of the San Francisco

George Kittle reveals text message to Brandon Aiyuk amid contract talks with 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are reportedly far apart in their negotiations for a contract extension. Both sides would love to reach a long-term deal, but it is proving more difficult than team decision-makers initially thought. Tight end George Kittle went through his own contract negotiations in 2020, signing a five-year, $75 million deal during training camp. Naturally, during an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show," Kittle was asked if he has had any discussions with Aiyuk during this process and if any advice has been extended. "In all honesty, this is how I have treated all my teammates that go through contract negotiations. I shoot him a text,"

Albert Breer predicts 49ers, Brandon Aiyuk standoff results in $29 million-a-year deal

We are unlikely to hear any updates on the contract standoff between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk until training camp begins late next month. Aiyuk signaled his dissatisfaction with the negotiation progress by skipping last week's mandatory minicamp, subjecting himself to fines totaling $101,716. Skipping training camp could result in further fines. Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently stated that there is no indication the 49ers will waive any fines resulting from Aiyuk's absences. "All those fines will start piling up in the summer, [and there's] no indication that the 49ers will forgive Aiyuk for absences the way that they did for Nick Bosa,"

Pelissero discusses Brandon Aiyuk's 49ers future

How much longer will the standoff between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continue? We're unlikely to hear any significant updates until closer to training camp in late July. That's when the team typically finalizes significant contract extensions with star players. Defensive end Nick Bosa, for example, got his deal done just days before the start of the regular season last year. The 49ers are hoping the Aiyuk situation doesn't drag on as long. They want their star receiver to practice with quarterback Brock Purdy and continue building on the chemistry they established last season. Aiyuk led the team with a career-high 1,342 receiving yards, while Purdy set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. Aiyuk sent a clear
