As expected, Cowboys decline fifth-year option on Trey Lance’s contract

The Cowboys will not exercise the fifth-year option on quarterback Trey Lance's contract, Todd Archer or ESPN reports.The move was expected given it would fully guarantee Lance $22.4 million for 2025. The Cowboys already have a cap hit of at least $40.137 million for Dak Prescott for next season, regardless whether he plays for them or not.Prescott, Cooper Rush and now Lance are scheduled to become free agents in 2025.The Cowboys acquired Lance from the 49ers last August for a 2024 fourth-round pick. The former No. 3 overall pick was inactive for all 17 games.He is set to make $5.31 million this season.Of the four quarterbacks drafted in the first round in 2021, only Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence had his fifth-year option exercised.Lance will compete with Rush for the backup job behind Prescott this season.The Cowboys have picked up the fifth-year option on defensive end Micah Parsons' contract.

Brandon Aiyuk probably wants to avoid playing on his fifth-year option. Although it would earn him $14.124 million in 2024, it is far below his market value. Similarly, the San Francisco 49ers likely want to avoid approaching the $30 million annual salary that might end the wide receiver's holdout.
Last week, Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reported what was likely the 49ers' latest offer to Aiyuk, stating, "I'm hearing maybe their offer's in the $26 million range, which, you know, it's certainly not Justin Jefferson money, nor should it be, but it's closer to that DeVonta Smith, Amon-Ra St. Brown, that next tier down."

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are reportedly far apart in their negotiations for a contract extension. Both sides would love to reach a long-term deal, but it is proving more difficult than team decision-makers initially thought.
Tight end George Kittle went through his own contract negotiations in 2020, signing a five-year, $75 million deal during training camp. Naturally, during an appearance on the "Dan Patrick Show," Kittle was asked if he has had any discussions with Aiyuk during this process and if any advice has been extended.

We are unlikely to hear any updates on the contract standoff between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk until training camp begins late next month. Aiyuk signaled his dissatisfaction with the negotiation progress by skipping last week's mandatory minicamp, subjecting himself to fines totaling $101,716.
Skipping training camp could result in further fines. Matt Barrows of The Athletic recently stated that there is no indication the 49ers will waive any fines resulting from Aiyuk's absences.
"All those fines will start piling up in the summer, [and there's] no indication that the 49ers will forgive Aiyuk for absences the way that they did for Nick Bosa,"
