The San Francisco 49ers did not submit a claim for former Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. There was a lot of speculation that they might, giving rookie
Brock Purdy a veteran backup with plenty of starting experience.
Mayfield is headed to the NFC West, though. He will join the 3-9 Los Angeles Rams, not the 8-4 division-leading 49ers. The Rams sat at No. 4 in the waiver wire priority order. San Francisco is at No. 24, so the chances of Mayfield falling to the Niners, had they been interested, was unlikely.
"
We look into everything," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday when asked about Mayfield. "But that would surprise me right now, and we've got to discuss it this afternoon and stuff. I've always been a fan of his, but I feel real good about our players."
RELATED Garoppolo won't require surgery, might only miss 7-8 weeks
On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jimmy Garoppolo's foot injury, once considered season-ending, isn't as severe as initially assumed. The quarterback suffered the injury on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins but won't require surgery after all. Instead, Schefter reports that there is
a chance for him to return in 7-8 weeks, making him a potential playoff contributor.
So it will be Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant in this year's draft, helming Shanahan's offense for the remainder of the regular season and possibly a playoff game or two, assuming the 49ers get that far. He will be joined by veteran NFL journeyman Josh Johnson, who the team
officially signed on Tuesday. San Francisco also has quarterback Jacob Eason on the practice squad.

George Kittle hopes 49ers offense can 'take another step forward'
George Kittle recently spoke with ESPN during the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, where he joined other NFL stars for the golfing event. Of course, the conversation shifted toward football, with Laura Rutledge asking Kittle to reflect on the team's 2023 season, its Super Bowl defeat, and the motivation it provides for the upcoming season.
The tight end believes San Francisco maintained a competitive roster this offseason and is gearing up for another run at a championship. He emphasized the importance of maintaining good health and continual improvement for a successful upcoming season.
"Brock Purdy is a fantastic quarterback, and he's only going to get better because he's young," Kittle said. "And we were fortunate enough to be able to keep our entire
Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history.
A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy.
Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end.

49ers' Brock Purdy addresses young fan's question about scripted NFL
Taylor Swift, the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Super Bowl overtime matchup. If the NFL is scripted, the league came up with a good one this past season—unless you're a San Francisco 49ers fan.
During his inaugural youth football camp at Levi's Stadium this past weekend, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy faced a candid inquiry from one young participant: Is the NFL scripted?
"No, the NFL is not scripted," a smiling Purdy responded. However, the quarterback added, "Good
Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk
It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago.
Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023
