The 49ers suffered several injuries on the defensive side of the football while playing on the artificial turf of Bank of America Stadium. The most significant injury might have been to Emmanuel Moseley. The team fears the starting cornerback suffered an ACL injury, ending his season.
Moseley earned the 49ers' seventh-highest defensive grade (66.3) from Pro Football Focus and was on pace for a career year (71.0 grade through five games). The cornerback intercepted Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield and returned it 41 yards for the first touchdown of his career. He finished the game with two tackles and two passes defensed.
Defensive end Nick Bosa exited the game with a tight groin. He was the 49ers defense's sixth-highest graded player (69.5), playing 26 snaps.
In his first game back from the injured reserve list, safety Jimmie Ward played one defensive snap before exiting the game with a broken hand.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward continues to prove he was a good offseason signing. He earned the best overall grade among his teammates and was second in the game only to Panthers tackle Ikem Ekwonu (92.1). Ward finished the game with a career-high four passes defensed with three tackles.
Linebacker Fred Warner recorded nine tackles and a pass defensed. He joined the 49ers' sack party, contributing one of the defense's six sacks on the day.
Safety Tashaun Gipson and linebacker Oren Burks combined to sack Panthers backup quarterback P.J. Walker. Gipson finished with four tackles, while Burks had two.
While safety Talanoa Hufanga recorded five tackles, a pass defensed, and earned his first career quarterback sack, it wasn't enough to boost what ended up being his second-worst defensive grade of the season (58.0). Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. registered 17 carries for 120 yards and a touchdown, including a career-long 41-yard run. The game represented his fourth career performance of 100-or-more rushing yards.
Running back Tevin Coleman, in his first action since returning to the 49ers, recorded eight carries for 23 yards and a rushing touchdown to go along with his three receptions for 44 yards and a score.
Guard Aaron Banks earned a career-low grade of 38.1, giving up two pressures, two hurries, and being the recipient of a penalty.
Slot cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was the 49ers' worst-graded player. Panthers quarterbacks targeted him 11 times, completing 10 receptions for 124 yards and the targets earning 60 yards after the catch.
