No shocker: Deebo Samuel won’t attend as 49ers start OTAs

The San Francisco 49ers kick off organized team activities (OTAs) today. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won't be there. He is still recovering from the March 8 surgery that stalled the team's ability to trade him. However, most expect Garoppolo to be off the roster by Week 1.

Another noticeable absence will be that of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Ian Rapoport confirmed that on Monday. Of course, that news shouldn't surprise anyone.

In April, news broke that Samuel no longer wanted to play for the 49ers and requested to be traded. If San Francisco's decision-makers were to give in, it would have been before or during the draft. That didn't happen, and the 49ers hope they can mend their relationship with their star receiver.

OTAs are voluntary, so no one expected the disgruntled wide receiver to attend. The team's first mandatory activity comes in the form of a three-day minicamp starting on June 13. Samuel's absence for that would be more headline-worthy.

Samuel's teammate, tight end George Kittle, recently spoke with the wide receiver. However, the discussion didn't involve the contract extension dispute between Samuel and the 49ers.

"Yeah, he seemed like he was in a good mood," Kittle said this week on The Pat McAfee Show. "He was hanging out with his kid, who he just had. ... I didn't ask about his contract, so we were just talking about other things, where he's training at, and we ended up talking about sneakers for a little bit because we both are sneakerheads. So that was our entire conversation, but he seems like he's in a good place.

"I think Deebo knows that this team loves him. We'd love to have him here. If he wants to play somewhere else, hey, it is what it is. It's a business, so I wish him nothing but the best of luck if he goes somewhere else."

Samuel is in Texas right now. He was spotted courtside at Sunday's NBA playoff game between the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks. After the Warriors' 109-100 victory, Draymond Green walked over to Samuel and awarded the wide receiver his game jersey. Later, Samuel was seen chatting with Stephen Curry outside the Warriors' locker room.

Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz reports that the San Francisco 49ers were among several NFL teams in attendance for former Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton's pro day workout. The defender also goes by the name "Johnny." Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
