Jul 31, 2021 at 3:40 PM--

Today was the day the narrative shifted. The first three days of training camp, the narrative was all about Jimmy Garoppolo. How much he has improved and how confident he looks. Meanwhile, players and coaches said as little as possible about the rookie, Trey Lance. Until Garoppolo threw two picks ...Continue reading

The San Francisco 49ers fear the worst but are praying for the best when it comes to starting cornerback Jason Verrett. The defender went down late during Sunday's 41-33 victory against the Detroit Lions, and head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after the game that the team fears he suffered a torn ACL. That would land Verrett on injured reserve for the sixth time in his eight NFL seasons. The cornerback admitted that he considered retirement after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in 2018 and was glad to get another chance with the 49ers. Now, he may be facing yet another difficult journey after staying relatively healthy last season and proving himself

There were two narratives presented to San Francisco 49ers fans this offseason. The first was by the team itself. Even though it was drafting a quarterback of the future in Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo remained very much in the plans for 2021. The other narrative was that the 49ers sought to trade Garoppolo but couldn't find a deal that fits. The team didn't care which narrative you believed. It was just moving forward with its plan. The 49ers, after all, have become incredibly proficient at blocking the outside noise, even as the coach, general manager, and player after player are repeatedly asked about the quarterback situation. Trey Lance took four snaps on Sunday against the Detroit Lions. One of those snaps featured the rookie quarterback's only pass and his first touchdown pass — a five-yard strike to wide receiver Trent Sherfield. Lance had replaced starter Jimmy Garoppolo on the drive. Maybe Garoppolo would have added that touchdown to his stats had he remained in the game. What was the veteran's reaction to seeing his eventual successor throw his first NFL touchdown? Garoppolo was among the first to celebrate with Lance on the sideline after the play. During the broadcast, Mark Sanchez, one of the FOX announcers calling the game, commented on the potential awkwardness of celebrating your young successor's accomplishment. "That's not an easy hug to give," Sanchez

49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo says Brandon Aiyuk will be ready when his number is called

When the San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions last Sunday, there were a few surprises, including wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk only playing 25 snaps in the game, having no passes come his way. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was asked about Aiyuk's lack of targets. "You know, it's one of those things that, our offense, you see it every season; it's a week-by-week offense," Garoppolo said Tuesday morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "One guy, this week is his number. Next week, it's the other guy. It's just one of those things that you can't get too caught up in it.
