Jets 'will answer' calls for Sam Darnold, who Simms calls 'last obstacle' for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas spoke with reporters on Wednesday and was asked about his quarterback, former No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold. The Jets own the No. 2 overall pick and are viewed as a strong candidate to draft a quarterback—perhaps Zach Wilson of BYU. The team could also opt to pursue Deshaun Watson if the Houston Texans ever release their grasp on the disgruntled quarterback.
Where does that leave the USC product, who has struggled on talent-deprived rosters in his three NFL seasons?
"I will answer the call if it's made," said Douglas when asked if he is open to trade

49ers projected to land two offensive stars in Draft Network seven-round mock
By Kirk Larrabee
Feb 20, 2021
Mock drafts are a dime a dozen this time of year, and most of them wind up projecting something unexciting that has already been projected several times before. But every once in a while, a mock draft comes along that is interesting enough to single out and discuss on its own, like this one from Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network.
Fowler put together a complete seven-round mock for the 49ers using The Draft Network's endlessly entertaining Mock Draft Machine and came up with an intriguing list of players that includes two of college football's biggest offensive stars over the past two seasons. The first is quarterback Justin Fields of Ohio State, whom Fowler has going to the 49ers in Round 1. The second

Simms wonders if 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is changing how he views QBs
By David Bonilla
Feb 24, 2021
Last year, Kyle Shanahan watched as Patrick Mahomes rallied his team late in the Super Bowl to dash the San Francisco 49ers' hopes of a sixth championship. With Deshaun Watson wanting out of Houston and interested teams contemplating what it might take to acquire the quarterback, should he force a trade, the coach has to look back at 2017 with at least a little regret. The 49ers could have had Watson — or Mahomes for that matter — and perhaps never would have had to wonder "what if?"
The 49ers passed on both quarterbacks because the plan was to acquire Kirk Cousins during the rebuilding process. So Shanahan and general manager John Lynch used their first-ever draft pick as a duo on defensive lineman Solomon Thomas.
It's been assumed that Shanahan is

49ers WR Travis Benjamin after a year away: "I can't wait to get back to football"
By David Bonilla
Feb 26, 2021
The San Francisco 49ers signed speedy former Browns and Chargers wide receiver Travis Benjamin to a one-year, $1.05 million contract last April. He was excited to be reunited with head coach Kyle Shanahan. San Francisco was so confident that Benjamin could contribute that it was willing to trade away its fastest wideout, Marquise Goodwin, during the draft.
Just over a month later, tragedy hit Benjamin's family. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going strong for nearly a year now, had hit home. The receiver lost his 77-year-old grandmother to complications from the virus. That changed Benjamin's outlook.
