That was short-lived. Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated — not too long ago today — reported that the San Francisco 49ers were on the cusp of a six-year, $94.8 million contract extension for All-Pro tight end George Kittle.

Don't celebrate just yet.

Kittle himself replied via Twitter, asking, "Y'all believe everything you read on the internet, huh?"

There you go.

Cohn's report stated that the 49ers would announce the new deal on Friday. It sounds like this is news to Kittle, or it could be that the details simply have not been finalized. We'll find out in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that his sources indicate that there is "healthier progress" toward a new deal between the two sides, but that nothing has been agreed to yet.

"The sides have not reached any agreement, league sources indicated Wednesday to NBC Sports Bay Area," wrote Maiocco, "but they appear to be making 'healthier progress' toward a deal that is expected to make Kittle the highest-paid tight end in the NFL by a wide margin."

Mike Silver of NFL Network also reports that there has been progress in the negotiations. Silver has reportedly been receiving his information from Kittle's agent, Jack Bechta.

In Cohn's defense, he did begin his report with "Take this for what it's worth," before offering up significant contract details.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week that general manager John Lynch has been working diligently to get a deal with Kittle done.

"I know right now, as we speak, every day, I know John's upstairs working his butt off talking to Kittle's agent," said Shanahan, "and those two are trying to work it out."

Former 49ers player seemingly calls out team for being "afraid to let guys compete"

By Marc Adams
May 4

It's not uncommon for a player to be frustrated with his lack of playing time. The San Francisco 49ers have their share of players who complained, usually after leaving the team, about how they were underused or weren't given the opportunities to showcase their skills. You can add former 49ers wide receiver Willie Snead IV to that list. On Friday, Snead shared his frustration on social media, writing, "All I want is to go back to a team that isn't afraid to let guys compete for a roster spot. These last 3 years been nothing short of entitlement…Competition breedz Champions." It's unclear what Snead was referring to when he said the past three years were "nothing short of entitlement."

Ricky Pearsall, the new San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, was the No. 31 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which extends through the 2030 season, all rookie contracts are four years. Salaries for each draft slot are predetermined based on league revenue. OverTheCap.com projects Pearsall's four-year deal to have a total value of $12.54 million, including a signing bonus of $5.94 million, which will be prorated over the contract's duration. This amount is fully guaranteed. Pearsall's salary cap impact for the upcoming season is estimated to be approximately $2.28 million, gradually increasing to a $3.99 million salary cap hit in 2027. While these figures are projections and are subject to slight

Report: 49ers keeping 'in touch' with free agent safety Jamal Adams

By David Bonilla
Apr 29

Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reports that the Seattle Seahawks remain interested in reuniting with free agent safety Jamal Adams. He adds another name to the list of teams considering Adams for the upcoming season—the San Francisco 49ers. "Sources said the San Francisco 49ers are among other teams who have kept in touch with Adams, so the Seahawks could have some competition for the former All-Pro safety, who is still just 28 years old," wrote Condotta. The New York Jets drafted Adams (6-1, 213) out of LSU with the No. 6 overall pick in 2017. He registered 48 tackles, including seven for a loss, two

Ian Rapoport sends clear message regarding 49ers' Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel

By David Bonilla
Apr 30

One thing is clear: Ian Rapoport expects Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel to be on the San Francisco 49ers roster when the team takes the field in Week 1 of the 2024 season. At this point, most probably feel that way. The fact that both stayed with the team throughout the draft clearly signals that general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan intend to retain their two talented receivers—at least for one more season. "Week 1 of 2024, it looks like they both will be [on the roster]," Rapoport told guest host Tom Pelissero on "The Rich Eisen Show." However, nothing in the NFL is ever certain. "Now, look, crazy things can happen," Rapoport continued. "Someone loses a star receiver, they decide to give the 49ers something of value for this
