Shanahan: Playing Jimmy Garoppolo in second half vs. Dolphins wasn't worth the risk

By Kirk Larrabee

One of many unpleasant surprises for the San Francisco 49ers in their 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins Sunday was the performance and health of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who was benched for the second half of the game after showing signs of ankle problems during an ineffective showing in the first half. Garoppolo was cleared last week to start against the Dolphins after missing the previous two weeks due to a high ankle sprain suffered in Week 2 against the New York Jets, but his performance in the first half made it obvious his ankle wasn't quite at 100 percent. Also missing is veteran Dee Ford, who is out indefinitely with a back injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan knows what a good pass rush can do for a defense, and the loss of Bosa has crippled the efforts to frustrate quarterbacks this season. The young pass

By David Bonilla
Oct 8, 2020

The two San Francisco 49ers tackles — and the whole offensive line, really — have been heavily criticized for their performances on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. Veteran tackle Trent Williams hasn't been immune to the criticism. Some called it one of the worst performances they've seen from Williams, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, during his illustrious career. One reporter on Thursday bluntly asked Williams about the Week 4 performance, saying, "Most of us haven't seen you basically get beaten like that in a long time." Williams responded by defending his play against the Eagles defense. "It depends on what you mean," Williams said. "If you're talking about pass [protection], I was credited for half a sack from the
