After beginning the final day of the NFL Draft by trading for Broncos running back Kapri Bibbs, the 49ers moved up in the fourth round to draft Utah running back Joe Williams with the No. 121 pick. The 49ers traded a fourth-round pick (No. 143) and fifth-round selection (No. 161) to the Colts to move up. In nine games last year, Williams, who ran a 4.41 40-yard dash, rushed for 1,407 yards (6.7 yards a carry) and 10 touchdowns. In his final game, he rushed for 222 yards on 26 carries in a win over Indiana in the Foster Farms Bowl at Levi's Stadium. Williams said he left football to finally deal with the emotional fallout from the death of his younger sister, Kylee, who died at 7 in 2006 because of an undiagnosed heart problem. Because it was hard to tell an adolescent at the time that his baby sister died and it wasn't his fault.
