How 49ers' Trey Lance is impressing his QB coach, Brian Griese

Brian Griese joined the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, leaving ESPN to be the team's quarterbacks coach and working with last year's No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance. He was among the assistant coaches who spoke with reporters on Thursday. "The other day, I was trying to think of what I would be doing now if I was still working in television, and I was so thankful to be here," Griese said. "Let's just put it that way." Griese, 47, spent 11 seasons as an NFL quarterback, so he can advise Lance on the challenges he might face while embarking on his first season as a starter. San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans says everyone is competing during training camp and the preseason. No one is assuming anything. Instead, players are fighting for roles this season. That includes the competition between Darqueze Dennard and rookie Samuel Womack III for the nickel cornerback job.
