I think he could be in real trouble this game. there are going to be lots of quick hitting routes from the packers. he's gonna be trying to get rid of the ball in 2 seconds or less. our lbs are gonna get an int!

Unfortunately, the second half of last year many teams used quick drops against us in an attempt to slow down our rush. Definitely in the playoffs it was all quick drops.

HOPEFULLY our slow-witted D coordinator has used these many months between to devise a defense to adjust for this. We should play more hybrid zones, with players sitting where offensive outlets would be. If we take away hot routes, this will give our defense an extra second or two in order to sack the QB.

You know we have it good when our weak link doesn't get to see the field. Hopefully Mangini helps along the way----- a little variety is the spice of life!

I was in Vegas this weekend and apparently was sitting next to clay Matthews brother. He was talking to some friends and said "I got colin kaepernick for fantasy league.. He tore up my bro clay last year" and he looked very very similiar to clay. Idk if it was him for sure though

Casey Matthew, his younger brother?

However, the word "bro" is fairly commonly used these days...
No clue what's going to happen but I feel this forum may be a little over confident.

Game could be a blowout, I hope not.. but I definitely think the Packers have a chance to win. It's week 1, all bets are off more so than any other given Sunday.

WRs/TEs are a better unit than last year. DL is much improved. OL/LB are the huge question marks and by all accounts they look to be in bad shape.

But... you still have to play the game. GB was down by 7 at the end of the third last time despite having 1/2 the TOP and considerably less yards. If i was a 49er fan I would be a little worried because all it takes is a few bounces and you could be down 21-0.

This goes for either team.

You don't truly believe Mathews would tell the defensive strategy to the media do you?

It doesn't matter. They don't have the players to stop the raiders offense. We can run it down their throats or go 4 wide.

because Kap threw a pick six and we had to work our way back...

Ok, but the same could be said about Jeremy Ross's 2nd quarter muffed punt which San Francisco turned into a TD from the GB 9 yard line. Those 2 plays basically cancel each other out. We can make excuses all day. I'm just saying I think this could very well be a tougher game than this forum is expecting.

Again, this is why they play the games.
GB's rushing isn't what worries me, Cobb is the one who kinda did almost whatever he wanted against us. Not worried about nelson too much,we kept him quiet plus hes still nursing a hamstring if im not mistaken.
I hope Patton and Williams have nice games, Id love to see a 49er rookie(Patton) in the ROY talks.

easy pick 6

9ers still had to get that TD after the punt..it wasn't a punt fumble return for TD

Clay Matthews says the Packers are going to hit the quarterback to stop this "fake offense". I suspect they think they are going to do the same thing the Ravens did in the Super Bowl, but I am sure we are not going to just give up the QB run like we did and will plan for extra protection to mark off the spy.

Why does everyone think that our playbook is exclusively the read option? We are a smashmouth running team with a sprinkle of option plays and a dynamic passing game

This. The 49ers offense is NOT the read-option. The RO is only one wrinkle in our diverse offense. If the Packers' game plan is to stop the RO exclusively, they are going to get burned badly. It's easy to say that they're going to implement a certain plan before the game. It's another matter to actually do it come game time, as the offense will counter what the defense is giving them and throw new wrinkles at them. If Clay Matthews wants to play the entire game as if he is trying to stop the RO that is perfectly fine by me.

Good post real9er.

With all the "hitting of the QB" I've heard to stop the read-option or slow it down, well isn't that more like playing dirty?? I mean, seriously, that's the only thing they could come up with to stop the read-option and I thought these were NFL defensive coordinators we were talking about.
I still say 2 can play this game. Do they really want to get into a duel of who can hit the QB hardest and most frequently? I bet they lose their QB before we do ours. LOL!

I know right!!! They got what, one pass-rusher in Clay Matthews and his fake defense lol, not to mention Staley held his ground pretty well against Matthews...who the heck is their LT lmfao.

Nelson had a minor knee surgery. I don't recall the specifics but it was something he's played with since college. Probably clearing out some debris. I believe he'll be at 100% Sunday.

1st and goal from the 9 might as well be a pick 6, we're splitting hairs here.

Fake offense? Lol

I'd guarantee we will run some plays out of the pistol, but the Packers have spent so much time on the read option, and they've been very vocal about it that I hope we don't use it. I think that's what Roman will do, make a "you can't stop anything we do" statement with whatever new wrinkle he's added this offseason.
