What's funny is that had that hail mary Smith threw been intercepted, as it should have been, we'd be staring at another loss and Singletary would be looking for a job. He was good, against the worst defense in the NFL, and got lucky a few times.

that's true, seemed very lucky, but Smith's comments made after the game seemed like they practiced that, but I agree, it seemed like a hail mary. If you want funny, if Alex was playing this game and had lost, it would have been blamed on VD being out, the game being at an odd time, Sing being an idiot, etc.

And that's the biggest difference. Troy found a way to win this game despite having not started in years, a scaled down playbook, an "international" home game, one of your best weapons sitting on the sidelines and a 1-7 record staring you in the face going into the 4th quarter.

I'm not saying he's our savior or even should be considered as a starter for next year. But this is what REAL NFL QBs do...they make plays when they need to be made and they find ways to lead their teams to wins, as opposed to invent new ways to lose.

I forgot one other Alexcuse, and that is that if he had played and lost, it would have also been blamed on our D's inability to stop Brandon Lloyd.

Alex scrotum lickers need to wake up...he's just not a very good QB/leader. A 3rd string scrub like Troy Smith can come in off the street and provide better leadership/playmaking ability than Alex. What else needs to be said???

Wow so because people supported the guy because he was our starter apparently we're gay for him? I support Troy Smith too but come on man that was a dbag thing to say and that's uncalled for. I thought you were better than that

:sigh:

This is why I wish the forum could be more moderate. Can't have a conversation when people automatically put you in one category and belittle you if you disagree with something they have to say.

Ah, well.... Such is life.

Consistency will be key. If Troy could string together 2 or more games then then we will be on to something. Otherwise he's just another...Smith.

Wow, there are some overly sensitive people here.

This wasn't meant for anyone in particular; if it was, I would've directed it accordingly. It was just an opinion, like any other opinion shared on this board about people (whoever they might be) who make excuse after excuse for Alex. So it's not meant for ALL Alex supporters, though some of you need to chill out a bit and not take s**t so personally.

Unfortunately, there are no valid excuses for losing in the NFL, regardless of how much we might like a certain player. You either win, or you don't, and that should be the measure, specifically, of an NFL QB...especially one who's been given 6 years to prove he belongs. It's a harsh view, but it's the truth.

Seriously though, if the shoe fits, wear it...if it doesn't, just ignore and move on.

A

He played good. Every QB has a lucky throw, s**t Brett and Sanchez do it all the time. Anyays he made nice reads and when he got comfy made quick decesions.

Oh and bottom line he won with the playcalling...best QB performance thus far

Ghost, I am with you. I don't understand why people are still on Alex Smith's nuts, especially after today. Troy Smith, a third stringer comes in and makes positive yardage on snaps where Alex would have gotten sacked or rolled right and threw the ball in the fifth row. After 6 years of Alex stinking up the place, people still make excuses for all his mistakes, nothing is ever his fault, makes me sick.
probably better than any of A. Smith's performances from 6 years...

just the way that Troy would avoid trouble and even stand tall when the pocket was moving around him proves how much alex blows.

That was the biggest positive about troy, in which he showed poise. He show several qualities that alex severely lacks.
1-held the ball till the last second with pressure imminent. Several of these turned into positive gains.
2-avoided pressure well, without rolling to throw it away.
3-gave the recievers chances to make plays on the ball, something alex rarely, if ever, manages. The pass to crabs and delanie were lobs, where alex typically throws darts, not giving the reciever a chance.

Overall, I would give him a B because he had some bad throws. I really liked his poise in the pocket and ability to dodge pressure. I think we all saw a glimpse of his mobility as well. I am not crowning him just yet, but it was definitely the best QB performance this season.

I like Troy Smith, but I just wish he was a couple of inches taller. I'm worried he won't be able to see over the OL.

Doug Flutie is 5'10, Jeff Garcia is 6'1, Drew Brees is 6', etc...

I'll give him a B. The Walker throw was mad lucky and coulda easily went the other way. No mistakes tho which is big, and he made some good plays with his feet.

Yeah. Had that been picked...it would have been a horrible decision. D Walk catches it and now it's "none of our other QBs have the balls to make those throws."

But you know what...I'll take our lucky breaks where we get them. Troy was impressive over all.

Yes, however, to the Alex fans (if Alex threw that ball) a pick there would have been as good as a punt so it would be no big deal, right?!

Troy played well yesterday. For God's sake, he hasn't played in 2-3 years and had about 5 days to prepare. How could we ask for more? He was a pleasure to watch, except for the constant run up the gut play calling. I hope after the bye they let Troy play more and open it up.

LB
I think it was a solid B, but comparing the second half in particular against the level of QB play we've seen this year, I think it has to be closer to an A. It wasn't lights out, but he made most of the throws you would expect and didn't turn it over (getting lucky with the fumble).

The sideline throw to Crabtree for the touchdown was sublime, I think that's the best looking throw I've seen a 9ers QB make this season (granted living out in Europe I don't get to see 'em all).

To grossly over-simplify Troy after 1 game, I can tell you there is one word that comes to mind that differentiates him over Alex, and it seems pretty obvious: moxie. Alex is a great guy, works damn hard and I'm sure wants to win as much as everyone, but Troy has that confidence and swagger you expect in a leader, running to celebrate with Crabs after the TD, staying fired up.

Troy might not be the savior (the 49ers have a history of QBs coming off the bench to surprise for a couple games - Tim Rattay anyone?), but seeing that kind of fire alone makes it pretty clear we've been missing that at such a crucial position.

I like Alex, but he's got to go to another team and revive is career there, cause frankly watching someone like Troy play is just more fun when he's allowed to throw, and really at this point I'd be happy with entertaining games before the W's come back to the Bay.

If anything we got a pretty good #2 Qb.
We can't really blame Troy for the stupid ass decisions by this inept group of foghats we call a coaching staff to go for freakin' handoffs on 3rd and long. I don't think he got a fair shake.

What do you mean? You don't like the 3 straight runs up the middle (accentuated by the gut run on 3rd and 4 yards to go to end the game earlier)?
