Chip Kelly on return to college coaching: “I’m the coach of the San Francisco 49ers”

Oct 24, 2016 at 2:40 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly met with the media today and was asked about the possibility of returning to coach at the college level.

Would he be interested in returning to college football? "No," Kelly said. "I'm the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. I'm not looking at anything else."

"Yeah, I'm here," Kelly added when asked if he would remain with the team once the season is over. Kelly said he has not heard from any schools about head coaching possibilities.

Last week, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that there would likely be a lot of Chip Kelly-back-to-college chatter starting in the coming weeks. "With his offense faltering in the pros and a poor roster, talk is he'll be looking," wrote La Canfora.

"Kelly's offense continues to be ridiculed by his peers in the NFL, and several coaches I spoke to expect him to hit the eject seat button after this season and return to college before his stock continues to drop given the horrible roster he has in San Francisco," La Canfora continued.

Could Richard Sherman return around the same time and give the defensive backfield a boost? It sounds like Sherman is getting closer to returning. Head coach Kyle Shanahan remains hopeful that his veteran cornerback can get back on the practice field soon after sitting on injured reserve with a calf injury since September 16. Sherman recently received injections to help reduce the inflammation and speed up his recovery after a small setback. "I'm doing a lot better," Sherman said this week on the Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which he co-hosts. "It's coming along. It's starting to
