Chip Kelly discusses why he gets outcoached in the second half

Oct 17, 2016 at 1:01 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was asked today why he thinks his team gets outplayed in the second half of games and why he gets outcoached.

"For us as a group, we need to do a better job of playing a complete football game," Kelly answered. "If there's one thing that you could point it at, it's 'Hey, it's this. Let's just make a change and do that.' But I think it's a combination of a lot of things.

"Like I just mentioned earlier to an earlier question, we had a couple of drops there in the third quarter that would have kept us on the field for certain drives and we didn't stay on the field for certain drives. Obviously, some of those drives on the defensive side of the ball, we're doing a good job, but we got some missed tackles that are involved in there. So, it's coaching and players."

Kelly insisted that the 49ers coaching staff makes adjustments in the second half. Following Sunday's 45-16 blowout, Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan stated that they did not need to make a whole lot of halftime adjustments against the 49ers offense and that the Bills defense just needed to play better.

Did the 49ers scheme change going against the Bills? "Yeah, I think we changed a little bit going into this game," Kelly said. "We kind of simplified the plan going into this game against Buffalo because you're playing against a multiple look team."

Kelly said that the simplified plan was done to give the 49ers players more opportunities. "That was our conscious effort going into this game," Kelly continued. "We've just got to sustain it. I think there's a couple of positions that we don't have a ton of depth at. They're probably playing too much at our inside linebacker spot. We need to rotate more at the linebacker spot. After losing NaVorro [Bowman] and after losing Ray-Ray [Armstrong] there, we just – [Nick] Bellore and [Michael] Wilhoite and [Gerald Hodges] out there – I think we need to rotate and play a little more guys at the inside linebacker spot."

Kelly's 49ers have lost five straight games after winning their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. It is the team's first five-game losing streak since a 0-5 start to the 2010 season. Many are comparing this team to last year's Jim Tomsula led squad, which won two of their first six games.

49ers' Trey Lance gets past 'mental hump' by studying Patrick Mahomes

By David Bonilla
May 19

The San Francisco 49ers, and several other teams, could have had Patrick Mahomes in 2017. Instead, the Niners opted to go in a different direction. Who knows how the franchise's fortunes might have differed had they selected the star quarterback over defensive lineman Solomon Thomas? Mahomes has gone on the win two Super Bowls, being named the MVP in each game. Four years later, the 49ers traded a haul of draft picks to move up to select Trey Lance, who, since 2021, has started only four NFL games. Mahomes may now be unknowingly helping the 49ers. Lance has been doing his homework on the All-Pro quarterback with the help of Jeff Christensen, the private quarterbacks coach who worked with him this offseason. Christensen used Mahomes, another of his clients, as an

Why Christian McCaffrey is excited about his 49ers future

It seemed so unfair. At least, that's what Rich Eisen thought when he heard rumors swirling that the San Francisco 49ers were looking to trade for star running back Christian McCaffrey. It just wasn't fair ... for the rest of the NFL. Like so many, Eisen has a great deal of respect for head coach Kyle Shanahan's system and the already-talented roster he and general manager John Lynch have built over the years. McCaffrey joined the Rich Eisen Show on Friday, and the two reflected on the trade that sent him from the Carolina Panthers to Shanahan's 49ers, a situation Eisen called "a perfect fit." "I'm definitely excited," McCaffrey told Eisen. "Like you said, it's a great fit for me. It's a great fit for, really, any skill player. It's a great

Why Cynthia Frelund named Brock Purdy the 49ers' most underappreciated player

By David Bonilla
May 27

NFL Media's Cynthia Frelund took on her annual offseason task of identifying the league's most underappreciated player for each team. The San Francisco 49ers certainly have their share of play-making superstars, from names like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle on offense to Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and Talanoa Hufanga on defense. So how do you determine a team's "underappreciated" contributor? "First, I calculate and then rank each player's season-long contribution metric by team (win share)," Frelund explains. "To sum it up without getting overly technical, the contribution metric (or win share) measures each

Why Baldy is a believer in Brock Purdy, 49ers offense

NFL Media analyst Brian Baldinger believes the San Francisco 49ers can boast a top-five offense in 2023. They certainly have the playmakers to do it. The unit features several stars like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle. Let's not forget quarterback Brock Purdy, last season's rookie sensation that guided the 49ers to eight consecutive wins before suffering a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Ndamukong Suh, who was on the opposing defense in that game, is not as impressed as most in the 49ers' second-year quarterback. Instead,
