MSU QB Connor Cook will have private workout for 49ers

Mar 16, 2016 at 5:04 PM--

Earlier today, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers were among the teams that met with Michigan State QB Connor Cook at the Spartans' pro day. 49ers regional scout Steve Rubio and outside linebackers coach Jason Tarver were scheduled to represent team at the pro day today while much of the remainder of San Francisco's staff, including head coach Chip Kelly, was in attendance at San Jose State's pro day.

Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that, according to Cook himself, the 49ers, along with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, will have private workouts with the former Spartan quarterback.

"Cook told reporters he will have private workouts in East Lansing with the 49ers, Cowboys and Dolphins," confirms Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

While Kelly stated today that he has been communicating with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a trade is still a possibility. Regardless of how that plays out, San Francisco may still be in the market for a quarterback of the future.

The 6-foot-4 Cook completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 9,194 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions over his college career for the Spartans. He is the 2015 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner, was First-team All-Big Ten and Big Ten QB of The Year last year, and came in ninth place in Heisman Trophy voting.

Cook has won the Big Ten Championship twice (2013, 2015), earning the MVP award in each of those games, and led his team to a 2014 Rose Bowl championship, where he was also the MVP, and a 2015 Cotton Bowl championship.

The 49ers cut things fairly short when it came to post-practice media sessions on Saturday, but that doesn't mean there weren't any items of interest to pass along. Quarterback Trey Lance and rookie wide receiver Danny Gray were the only players to speak to reporters after practice on Saturday, and each of them talked about a number of topics. Lance spoke about what he's seen from a number of veterans and young players on offense, while Gray discussed where he is in his development since being selected by the 49ers in Round 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft. And there was another rookie on Saturday who put on a memorable show at practice, albeit in a unique way. Here's a rundown of what was discussed Saturday afternoon. * Welcome back

Drake Jackson's usage might vary week to week; Young 49ers CBs have an opportunity vs. Packers

By David Bonilla
Aug 10

Maybe soon, Drake Jackson will become the complementary bookend to Nick Bosa that the San Francisco 49ers envisioned for Dee Ford. That was the hope when the team used its first selection in this year's draft, a second-round pick, on the defensive end out of USC. DeMeco Ryans is in his second year as the 49ers' defensive coordinator. He is working to ensure young players like Jackson are prepared for the rigors of an NFL season. He also wants to put those players in the best position to succeed. Their success is the 49ers' success, after all. For now, it looks like the 49ers have Samson Ebukam penciled in as the starter opposite Bosa. That role should eventually land with Jackson. "With Drake, he's coming along," Ryans told reporters after Wednesday's practice.
