Deebo Samuel's 49ers trade request wasn't a negotiation tactic, says Michael Irvin

After Deebo Samuel signed a three-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making the talented wide receiver a very wealthy man, some assumed that his April trade request was a negotiating tactic. According to Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and NFL Network analyst Michael Irvin, it wasn't. Samuel legitimately wanted out of Santa Clara. In April, Irvin admitted that he spoke with Samuel after the Super Bowl, advising the young wideout to stay with Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers because that would be best for his career. "Like, it kind of felt, OK, he didn't receive that well," Irvin said in April. In an interview with 95.7 The Game on

Kyle Shanahan on why Thursday was a 'real good' practice despite interceptions, and how picky 49ers are about Jimmy Garoppolo's destination

Trey Lance didn't exactly have a great stat line during Thursday's training camp session for the San Francisco 49ers, but head coach Kyle Shanahan says Lance was correct when he said Thursday's practice was better than Wednesday's despite multiple interceptions by the team's quarterbacks. Lance threw one of those interceptions and completed seven of 15 passes throughout the practice, while backups Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy threw three combined picks, according to 49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. But afterwards, Lance told reporters he was encouraged with

49ers QB Trey Lance: The Ups and Downs

An old cliche phrase says, "It's not about how you start. It's about how you finish." I would encourage the faithful to keep that in mind when evaluating the new quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Trey Lance. After three practices, Lance has completed around 20 out of 37 passes and thrown two interceptions for a completion rate of a little over 50 percent (54 percent, to be exact). A young quarterback completing over 50 percent of his passes is not that bad, especially when you factor in the context. During day one's session at training camp, Lance went 9-11 with zero interceptions. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley should have picked one pass, but it was dropped and recorded as a pass breakup, and the other was an incompletion because his receiver slipped and

Will the 49ers sign a veteran center? Will they move Deebo Samuel to tight end? And other mailbag questions answered

On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers began padded practices. The contract extension for Deebo Samuel was also announced. It's a fun time of the year, as the team prepares to make another run for a sixth Super Bowl championship. We opened up the 49ers mailbag and had plenty of questions to choose from. Let's respond to a handful: Diana Kayatani: There's talk about Jimmy possibly going to the Seahawks. If and when he leaves, where should he go? Felix Watkins: Where do you think Jimmy is going? The world awaits news on Jimmy Garoppolo. Will he be traded or released? Where will he go? Will he be a starter or a backup? How does he get his hair to look so nice? I wish we already had the answer to those questions. The good
