49ers mailbag: Will 49ers sign a big-name QB? Who will Ryans take to Houston? Who will replace Ryans? Will Garoppolo return?
By Marc Adams
Feb 1
There's not much going on with the San Francisco 49ers. Not unless you count these small bits of news:
Brock Purdy has a UCL tear and will likely need surgery. If they can repair the tendon, he'll need six months of recovery time (which is August). If they have to replace it (Tommy John surgery), it will be decidedly longer.
Trey Lance says he is three to four weeks from being cleared to practice, and that he should be 100% by OTAs (organized team activities).
Trent Williams was walking with a crutch on Tuesday (locker cleanout day) and had a walking boot on. But he said it's nothing.
DeMeco Ryans was hired to be the next head coach of the Houston Texans.
Tom Brady announced his retirement Wednesday morning, so those hoping he

Will Jake Brendel be the Center of Attention for the 49ers?
By Wayne P. Brown
Feb 4
San Francisco 49ers center Jake Brendel went from being undrafted to the starting center of the 49ers. He ranked 11th in blocking amongst 50 centers in NFL, per Pro Football Focus. In his first entire season as a starter, Brendel has given up 14 pressures (one sack, three hits, and ten hurries). He had the opportunity of snapping the ball to not one, not two, not three, but four quarterbacks during the same season. Jake is unique, memorable, and, most important, a trustworthy person to have on a championship team.
Brendel will become one of the 23 unrestricted free agents for the San Francisco 49ers. In his most recent interview, he stated that he has a family and is ready to take on free agency.
"You still got to hit free agency and see what that is, and I have

By David Bonilla

Trent Williams is done pondering his immediate NFL future. This past week, the offensive tackle hinted that he might be considering calling it a career, but just days later, he sounds pretty confident that he will return for the 2023 season.
While participating in Saturday's Pro Bowl games, Williams was asked if he'll be back next season.
"Yeah, for sure," Williams responded, per Grant Gordon of NFL Media. "Next year, the year after. I'm under contract until I'm 39 [years old]."

By David Bonilla

The NFL has fined two San Francisco 49ers players—tackle Trent Williams and linebacker Dre Greenlaw—for unnecessary roughness in last weekend's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Greenlaw was fined $10,430. Williams was hit with a $12,731 fine for the actions that led to his ejection late in the game.
Update: Pro Football Talk reports that 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga was fined $4,916 for hitting Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts out of bounds late in the third
