The San Francisco 49ers announced that the team has officially exercised the fifth-year option on offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, keeping the offensive lineman with the team through the 2022 season. The move was expected. General manager John Lynch informed reporters before the draft that the team planned to pick up the option, which will guarantee McGlinchey $10.88 million in 2022. The 49ers drafted McGlinchey out of Notre Dame with the No. 9 overall pick in 2018. The 26-year-old has appeared in 44 games — all starts — through his three NFL seasons. And here you thought the Aaron Rodgers-to-San Francisco 49ers chatter was over. I'll preface this by saying what Jason Smith of FOX Sports Radio said about the 49ers and the Green Bay Packers quarterback might be the most ridiculous thing you read today. Now that you have been sufficiently warned, brace yourself, and proceed, if you wish. Smith believes San Francisco remains interested in Rodgers, and drafting Trey Lance of North Dakota State with the No. 3 overall pick last week hasn't changed that. Now, any rational reporter or fan clearly understands that the Niners heard about the disgruntled Green Bay quarterback and did their due diligence, as head coach Kyle

La Canfora: Strong expectation among NFL GMs that 49ers try to trade Jimmy Garoppolo this week

By David Bonilla
Apr 27, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers have repeatedly stated that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains in the team's plans for 2021. That would mean a rookie sitting behind him for at least the upcoming season, which makes sense. The 49ers are built to win now and have shown they can do so with Garoppolo at the helm. However, his durability has become a concern after missing 23 games over the past three seasons. Maybe that won't remain the plan. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that there is a "very strong" expectation around the league that San Francisco will make an effort to trade Garoppolo before or even during the draft. "Timing isn't great with 5 QBs about to go in 1st round, but Jimmy G's future there now seen as bleak," wrote La Canfora via
