Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick by the team in 2005, officially announced his retirement from NFL today. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CN2j9LohMi4/?utm_source=ig_embed The announcement has garnered a significant reaction from the media, who watched Smith not only overcome a devastating leg injury that nearly cost him his life, but also return to football this past season, earning him NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. Here are a few of the reactions from Bay Area reporters who helped cover the team for at least a portion of Smith's eight seasons with the

Jason Verrett on re-signing with 49ers: 'My heart was always with San Fran'

Jason Verrett enjoyed dipping his toes into the free-agency waters. The veteran cornerback ended up re-signing with the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year deal, but it wasn't due to a lack of interest from other teams. He opted to bet on himself again, as he did last offseason, and prove to skeptics that he can stay healthy while playing at a high level. It also feels good to stay with something familiar. "[Free agency] was a good experience," Verrett told reporters via Zoom on Monday. "It always feels good to be wanted, but my heart was always with San Fran. I love the comradely we've got with the team, the coaches, staff, training staff, the amazing fans, the whole nine yards. I was happy that we [were] able to get a deal done, and I'm just excited to see what

Jason Verrett, teammates trust Jimmy Garoppolo, but believe in 49ers front office

Unless you stay off of social media, as Jimmy Garoppolo does, it's tough to escape all of the speculation surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback's future. Garoppolo remains the favorite to be the Week 1 starter. Beyond 2021, though, who knows? San Francisco recently traded away several valuable draft picks, including multiple first-rounders, to move up to the No. 3 spot for the opportunity to acquire a quarterback of the future. The team obviously sees a potential upgrade in at least one option between Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Mac Jones. However, Garoppolo remains in the team's plans for this season, allowing a rookie the luxury of sitting and learning behind a veteran. Cornerback Jason Verrett spoke with reporters today. While he plays on the

Jeremiah on 49ers' pick in latest mock draft: 'I am surprised that everything you hear points toward Jones'

With so many smokescreens and teams keeping their strategies close to the vest, it's tough to believe anything you hear when it comes to pre-draft rumors and speculation. Everyone in the media feels the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 spot for Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, whether they can make sense of it or not. Much of that is based on what they hear from around the league. Their colleagues and other teams feel Jones might be the pick, despite the overwhelming opinion that the selection would be a reach. NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks doesn't even view Jones as worthy of a first-round pick, much less No. 3 overall. "Perhaps the Alabama quarterback is a secret member of The Avengers, operating like Tony Stark as Iron Man,"
