PFF lists center Weston Richburg as 49ers' top cut candidate
By David Bonilla
Feb 25, 2021
Salary cap analyst Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus went through the exercise of picking each NFL team's top cut candidate this offseason. For the San Francisco 49ers, he named an offensive lineman who spent all of last season on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list — center Weston Richburg.
With over $13 million in projected salary-cap space, a post-June 1 cut of Richburg would save the team nearly $8 million while creating about $3.5 million in dead money.
Spielberger did consider listing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but general manager John Lynch's comments on Wednesday during the Eye Test for Two

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, San Francisco 49ers center Weston Richburg, who missed all of last season, recently had hip surgery. There is no timetable for his return, and the NFL insider expects that the offensive lineman has played his last down in San Francisco.

Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there has been a ton of smoke coming out of Santa Clara concerning the 49ers, their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, and the future of the two together. Don't get me wrong, the most likely scenario for who starts under center for the 49ers in 2021 is Jimmy Garoppolo, but GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have made it clear that they are open to upgrading the position and moving on from Jimmy G.
If the 49ers do move on from Garoppolo, they shouldn't look to mortgage the future by trading a haul of picks to move up into the top 10 or even top 5 for a quarterback. They should pick No. 10 from Alabama, quarterback Mac Jones, if he falls to the twelfth pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Alex Smith reflects on his 49ers days with Colin Kaepernick, addresses his NFL future
By Kirk Larrabee

It's been the better part of a decade since Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick were part of the same quarterback room with the San Francisco 49ers, but Smith still sounds as impressed as ever with what he experienced on and off the field when the two of them were teammates.
Smith spoke for almost an hour this week on Kaepernick and a number of other subjects during a guest spot on the 10 Questions With Kyle Brandt Podcast (click here to listen). Smith, who was the starting quarterback for the 49ers when Kaepernick was selected in Round 2 of the 2011 NFL Draft, told Brandt he remembered Kaepernick as a "great dude" who brought an impressive work ethic to the NFL right out of the gate.
