Steve Young reflects on nearly being traded to the Cardinals before landing with the 49ers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded quarterback Steve Young to the San Francisco 49ers on April 24, 1987. Young almost ended up with the St. Louis Cardinals, though. This week, the Hall of Fame quarterback shared that part of his trade story with Rich Eisen. Young landed with Tampa Bay via a supplemental draft after forcing his way out of the USFL, which ceased operations soon after. The quarterback went on to play 19 games with the Buccaneers from 1985 until 1986, going 3-16 as a starter. "That's when I was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, who was an equally bad team," Young shared on the Rich Eisen Show. "And I had made a great relationship with Hugh Culverhouse, the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the time, a trusted relationship. And he had told

Have Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch mismanaged the 49ers QB situation?

The San Francisco 49ers plan was set. Draft a young quarterback who would eventually replace Jimmy Garoppolo. The young draftee would be able to sit and learn under the veteran Garoppolo, and then take over in 2022. But things haven't exactly gone according to plan, and on Sunday, the plan imploded when Trey Lance broke his ankle—an injury that will cost him the remainder of the 2022 season. Much has been made about how well (or poorly) Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have managed the 49ers quarterbacks. I've seen many fans and media blaming Shanahan for the current situation. Many have criticized the duo for how messy the QB situation has been since trading away two first-round round picks, and swapping another first-round pick, to draft a quarterback. Have

George Kittle explains why 49ers are fortunate to still have Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers feel fortunate right now. After spending all offseason trying to get rid of Jimmy Garoppolo and not finding a trade partner, the team signed the quarterback to a restructured one-year deal to serve as Trey Lance's backup. The Niners likely hoped a trade partner would emerge later in the season—a destination Garoppolo would have approved, voiding his no-trade clause. San Francisco getting stuck with Garoppolo turned out to be a blessing. Lance broke his ankle five quarters into the season and was lost for the season. Enter Garoppolo; the one-time castoff turned savior. It's like 2021 again. The veteran quarterback received all the practice reps this week and will make his first start of the season on Sunday night against

You've seen the famous photograph.
