Steve Young on 49ers' Trey Lance: 'I came away wanting to see more'

By Marc Adams
Oct 7

Hall-of-Famer and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Steve Young, was a guest Thursday morning on KNBR radio. He spoke about Trey Lance's performance against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday. Lance entered the game at quarterback at the beginning of the second half due to a calf injury sustained by starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Young is among some of the former 49ers who have been vocal in their belief that the 49ers, at minimum, need to give Lance more playing time. This Sunday, Lance will likely make his first start in Arizona against the 4-0 Cardinals. In reference to what he saw from the rookie quarterback on Sunday, Young said, "Watching Trey throughout the game, it reminded me of my Tampa Bay days. He has a much better team with him right now than I did,

Hall-of-Fame quarterback Steve Young appeared on KNBR Radio for his weekly show to discuss the San Francisco 49ers. He had plenty to say about 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance, and his starting debut last Sunday in Arizona. "Well, I mean he is awesomely raw," Young told KNBR's 'Tolbert, Krueger and Brooks' on Wednesday. "There is some stuff, but you know it is moving very quickly. Quarterbacking is about coming to a place where no matter how crazy it is, how intense the moment -- it's how quiet your mind is. When your mind is quiet and you own the data, and you own the moment, then your body, that's when the measure of you as an athlete comes out. "It's a wonderful place to get to, but until it does you're always trying to get to manage your brain being

All eyes are on the status of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The team is holding its final practice of the week, and it's the last chance for Garoppolo to see if he can go for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. If not, that would likely mean rookie Trey Lance is getting his first NFL start. "I think today is critical," general manager John Lynch said this morning. "If it's not today, then we go with Trey." After missing Wednesday and Thursday's sessions, multiple reports state that Garoppolo was not on the field as today's practice got underway. That likely means we'll see Lance start in his place on Sunday. Of course,

Alex Mack says fans shouldn't be concerned about 49ers rookie Aaron Banks' lack of playing time

The San Francisco 49ers have played five games this season. Their second-round draft pick, guard Aaron Banks, has been inactive for each of them. That has led many to question the selection. That's a high draft slot for a player who has yet to contribute this season. Veteran center Alex Mack joined KNBR this morning and was asked about his rookie teammate. What does Banks need to do to get on the football field for the 49ers? "Just keep putting the work in," Mack responded on the Murph & Mac show. "You know, he's a good dude. He works hard. He just has a couple of more things to learn and put the work in. And it's a credit to the other guards that it's not easy to break the starting lineup. We have a lot of depth here. "Aaron is
