When NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks released his first 2026 mock draft for NFL.com, he projected the San Francisco 49ers would select Monroe Freeling with the No. 27 overall pick.
Nearly a month later, Brooks still has the 49ers targeting an offensive tackle in Round 1 — just a different prospect. In his latest mock draft, he projects San Francisco to select Caleb Lomu of Utah at No. 27 overall. Notably, Brooks previously slotted Lomu as the No. 6 overall pick in his initial mock.
"The most natural left tackle prospect in the draft could give the 49ers an enviable long-term plan at the crucial position," Brooks wrote. "Lomu's nimble feet and quick hands would make him the perfect eventual replacement for Trent Williams on the blind side."
The 49ers' direction with their first-round pick remains uncertain. The roster has several needs, and identifying a long-term successor to Trent Williams is undeniably among them. However, with the future Hall of Famer planning to play in 2026, some may view left tackle as more of a future priority than an immediate need.
San Francisco could instead opt for a young player who can make an immediate impact.
Still, offensive tackle is a need the 49ers have not properly addressed in recent years. Investing a first-round pick in a long-term solution at one of the NFL's most valuable positions would be a prudent, forward-thinking move — one that would likely be welcomed by the fanbase.
According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Lomu allowed just eight pressures and zero sacks across 383 pass-blocking snaps in 2025. His 82.1 pass-blocking grade marked a career high, though his 62.0 run-blocking grade dipped from his 70.1 mark in 2024.
Given the 49ers' emphasis on run blocking, Lomu would need to show improvement in that area at the next level. However, at 6-foot-6 and 308 pounds, he profiles as a seamless fit at left tackle, his natural position in college.
