The biggest news out of Santa Clara on Tuesday was that the San Francisco 49ers are opening star linebacker Fred Warner's practice window this week. However, that was just one of several injury-related updates shared by head coach Kyle Shanahan as the team prepares for its Divisional Round playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
Due to the short week following Sunday's game, the 49ers are planning to hold two full practices—Wednesday and Thursday—before traveling to Lumen Field for Saturday night's showdown.
San Francisco will hold a light walk-through on Tuesday, with no contact between players. Coaches will then evaluate player readiness and, if necessary, adjust the practice plan for the remainder of the week.
If the 49ers had conducted a full practice on Tuesday, Shanahan said the following players would not have participated:
- LB Dee Winters (ankle)
- S Ji'Ayir Brown (hamstring)
- LB Luke Gifford (quadriceps)
The following players would have been limited participants:
- G Dominick Puni (ankle)
- DE Keion White (groin, hamstring)
- WR Ricky Pearsall (knee)
- DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
Left tackle Trent Williams, who played through a hamstring injury in Sunday's win, would have been given a veteran rest day.
"It was awesome having Trent back [on Sunday], and we're going to really embrace having him back this week," Shanahan said.
Nick Martin remains in the concussion protocol
Shanahan also confirmed that the 49ers do not plan to open linebacker Nick Martin's practice window this week. The rookie remains in the concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in Week 13 against the Cleveland Browns on November 30.
George Kittle injury update
Tight end George Kittle, who suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles, is scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday. As a result, he is unlikely to travel with the team to Seattle.
"I think that would make it hard for this weekend," Shanahan said. "But we'll see after that."
