Saleh was widely expected to be one of the top names in this year's NFL head coaching cycle. He returned to the 49ers last year after serving as head coach of the New York Jets from 2021 through 2024. The Jets dismissed Saleh during the 2024 season. Prior to that, he was San Francisco's defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, overseeing one of the league's most dominant defenses.
San Francisco's defense finished the 2025 regular season ranked 20th in total yards allowed and 13th in points allowed. San Francisco was without several key contributors for much of the season, including All-Pros Fred Warner and Nick Bosa.
The 49ers are currently preparing to face the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in the NFC Wild Card round. Saleh's future is expected to remain a major storyline to monitor during the NFL's head coach hiring cycle.
