The San Francisco 49ers will once again be without their starting quarterback on Sunday. Brock Purdy is listed as questionable for the second straight week as he continues to recover from a turf toe injury that has sidelined him since Week 4.
Last weekend, Purdy was among the 49ers' seven inactive players against the New York Giants. While there's a chance he could be available this week against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan made it clear that he won't be starting.
"It'll be Mac again starting," Shanahan told reporters. "I haven't decided whether to make him (Purdy) active or not, but he's further along this week than last week."
When asked what the 49ers need to see from Purdy before activating him, Shanahan explained that the decision typically comes after Saturday's final check-in.
"Just talking to him, which I don't do, really, until Saturday," Shanahan said. "Just talked about how the whole week went and stuff—I did a last Saturday with him—and see where he is this Saturday compared to a week ago, and knowing each week's a little bit different, and seeing how much better he's gotten."
Purdy originally suffered the turf toe injury in Week 1, briefly returned in Week 4, but aggravated it and hasn't played since.
In his absence, Mac Jones has started seven games, throwing for 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The 49ers enter their Week 10 matchup against the Rams at Levi's Stadium with a 6-3 record, aiming to stay competitive in a tight NFC West race.
