There will be no shortage of opportunities for wide receiver Ricky Pearsall to make an impact in the San Francisco 49ers offense this season. That's not just because of the first-round investment the team made in him during the 2024 NFL Draft, but also due to the injuries that have ravaged the 49ers' receiving corps.
Brandon Aiyuk began the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, while projected WR1 Jauan Jennings is dealing with both a calf injury and an ongoing contract dispute. Second-year wideout Jacob Cowing landed on injured reserve with a torn hamstring, and rookie Jordan Watkins suffered a high-ankle sprain during the preseason opener.
San Francisco even signed veteran Demarcus Robinson to provide depth, but he was suspended for the first three games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
For years, the 49ers' receivers—along with star tight end George Kittle—have been known for their ability to create big plays after the catch. They proudly call themselves the "YAC bros," and head coach Kyle Shanahan believes Pearsall has the skill set to join that group.
"I think anytime you have really good hands, that's where it starts with having yards after the catch," Shanahan said Wednesday. "How quickly you can stop the spin of a ball, tuck it away, and get immediately vertical usually has to do with how good your hands are. Ricky is very good at that.
"Then, other stuff goes into breaking tackles and stuff. [WR] Deebo [Samuel] was elite at that because of how big he was and how powerful he was. Then some guys get yards after the catch because they can run away from everybody.
"But usually, the guys who have yards after the catch are guys who don't mess around and catch it clean, get right up the field. That, to me, always starts with your hands and leads to the mindset of how you play football."
Pearsall's rookie journey was anything but ordinary. After suffering a gunshot wound to the chest during a robbery attempt, he missed the first six games of the 2024 season. Despite the setback, he finished his rookie year with 31 catches for 400 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, he flashed star potential late in the year, recording 14 receptions for 210 yards and two touchdowns across Weeks 17 and 18.
Averaging 15 yards per reception in those final two games, Pearsall showed off his big-play ability and gave 49ers fans a glimpse of his potential. His growing chemistry with quarterback Brock Purdy throughout training camp has only added to the excitement. Now healthy and poised for a breakout, Pearsall looks ready to take his place among the "YAC bros."
