Jake Moody is a name that generates a variety of reactions among 49ers Faithful, but for at least one day, perhaps those reactions will be (mostly) positive.
Moody, who is entering the season under tremendous scrutiny following an inconsistent kicking performance in 2024, connected on five field goals on six attempts against the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, including a career-long 59-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 22-19 win as time expired. Moody's showing on the day was far from perfect, as he missed from 53 yards earlier in the game and had a couple of wobbly makes from there, but hitting on the game winner could prove to be a big step in the right direction for the oft-maligned kicker as he enters his third season.
The banged-up 49ers fielded a number of starters at the beginning of the game, including Brock Purdy at quarterback, but the backups played the bulk of the game after the first possession. Purdy finished with 66 yards on 5-of-7 passing, leading the 49ers to a field goal on his only drive. Geno Smith started at quarterback for the Raiders and finished with 55 yards on 6-of-8 passing. Mac Jones led the 49ers with 13-of-16 passing for 135 yards and an interception, while Aidan O'Connell played most of the game for the Raiders and finished with 138 yards and one interception on 15-of-23 passing.
First Half
The 49ers opened the game with possession and put together a 12-play, 61-yard drive that moved inside the Raiders' 15-yard line before ending with a field goal from Moody. Purdy overcame a 3rd-and-18 early in the drive with a 21-yard completion to Ricky Pearsall, who had three catches for 42 yards on the opening drive. Completions to wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Isaiah Hodgins helped the 49ers move into field goal range before the drive stalled, resulting in a 30-yard field goal from Moody and a 3-0 lead.

The Raiders tied the game at three on the next possession with an eight-play, 47-yard drive that ended with a field goal from Daniel Carlson. A 28-yard completion from Smith to tight end Brock Bowers put the Raiders in 49ers territory on the first play of the drive, but after moving inside the 30-yard line, the 49ers held firm on defense and forced a 41-yard field goal. Mac Jones took over at quarterback for the 49ers on the second possession, which came to a quick end on an interception on the fifth play of the drive by safety Jeremy Chinn. It was the second interception in as many games for Jones, which led to the Raiders taking possession at the 49ers' 41-yard line.

The Raiders cashed in on the turnover with an 8-play, 41-yard drive that was capped by a 1-yard run by Ashton Jeanty. The first-round pick Jeanty had five carries for 24 yards on the drive, then finished things off with his first NFL preseason touchdown.

Things went better for Jones on the next drive but not necessarily for the 49ers, who lost another player due to injury. After a roughing the passer penalty on the first play of the drive moved the ball to the 45-yard line, running back Corey Kiner fell to the turf after a 19-yard run and was carted off the field with an apparent ankle injury, further thinning a position where the 49ers are already missing multiple players. But Ke'Shawn Vaughn and Jeff Wilson stepped up at running back the rest of the drive while Jones notched key completions to wide receiver Russell Gage and tight end Luke Farrell, before Wilson ran in from one yard out to tie the game at 10.

After a three-and-out for the Raiders that was forced in part by a third-down sack by rookie linebacker Nick Martin, the 49ers put together a 10-play, 42-yard drive that ended with a 53-yard field goal attempt by kicker Jake Moody. But Moody sailed the kick wide left, giving the Raiders possession at their own 43-yard line with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
The Raiders ended their half with a 13-play, 40-yard drive that ran all but eight seconds off the clock and ended in a 35-yard field goal from Carlson. The 49ers kneeled on the ball to end the half, leaving the Raiders with a 13-10 lead at the break. The 49ers held a statistical edge at halftime offensively despite trailing on the scoreboard, leading in first downs (13-9), yardage (186-131), passing yards (136-91), and rushing yards (50-40).
Second Half
The Raiders got downfield quickly on the opening drive of the second half, moving to the 49ers' 40-yard line on three plays. But on a 3rd-and-8 from the 28-yard line, O'Connell was picked off by defensive back Chase Lucas, giving the 49ers the ball at the 20-yard line. Jones then engineered a drive that saw him complete a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Robbie Chosen and a 17-yard completion to wide receiver Terique Owens, as well as a key fourth-down completion to tight end Jake Tonges, before things stalled inside the 10. The 49ers intended to go for a touchdown on a 4th-and-Goal play from the 3-yard line, but a false start penalty pushed them back and forced them to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Moody to tie the game at 13.

The teams traded field goals from there, with the first coming after an 11-play, 45-yard drive that took the game into the fourth quarter and gave Carlson his third field goal of the day, this one from 54 yards. With Carter Bradley in the game at quarterback, the 49ers answered the Carlson field goal with another long opportunity for Moody, this one from 50 yards out to tie the game at 16 with just under ten minutes to play.
With Cam Miller in the game at quarterback, the Raiders followed the 49ers' field goal with a 13-play, 53-yard drive that ended with the fourth field goal of the game for Carlson, this one from 30 yards. The 49ers were left with 3:33 on the clock after a kick return from Dallis Flowers that set them up at the 30, the 49ers faced a 4th-and-8 at their own 32-yard line following a third down sack, but tight end Jake Tonges kept the drive going after taking a short pass from Bradley and reaching the ball across the line to gain for a first down.
The ball moved across midfield after a 16-yard completion to Jeff Wilson, then after a holding penalty on the Raiders, a 30-yard completion to Robbie Chosen set the 49ers up with a 1st-and-Goal at the 9-yard line. But a series of errors from there ensured that the 49ers wouldn't get any closer that that. A false start penalty on tackle Isaiah Prince, his third of the game, pushed the 49ers back five yards, then a snap infraction on center Nick Zakelj pushed the ball back to the 19-yard line. A sack on the next play by defensive tackle JJ Pegues moved the 49ers back even further, then after an incomplete pass on third down, Moody tied the game with a 44-yard field goal as the clock wound down to 37 seconds.

The Raiders had three timeouts to work with after the kickoff, but two sacks and an interception by safety Jaylen Mahoney gave the 49ers the ball at the Raiders' 41-yard line with 13 seconds to play. The 49ers, with one time out to work with, threw two straight incompletions to start their final possession, leaving Moody to attempt a game-winning field goal from a career-long 59 yards. Moody connected on the kick with room to spare, giving the 49ers a 22-19 win.
