San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Monday following the team's 13th practice of training camp, providing several key injury updates ahead of the preseason matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The most notable news involved rookie wide receiver Jordan Watkins, who suffered a high-ankle sprain during Saturday's preseason loss to the Denver Broncos.
"Jordan Watkins ended up having a high-ankle sprain," Shanahan said. "He's gonna be out about a month."
Shanahan explained that Watkins didn't initially realize the severity of the injury.
"He didn't even feel it after the game," Shanahan noted. "He was surprised. He actually reported some other things, came in the next day, saying how it was a little sore, maybe we should look at it. And we weren't that worried about it until we got an MRI and it showed a high-ankle."
Shanahan added: "It was really unfortunate for Watkins to get that setback because I really believed he could have helped us early, but he needed the practice to do it, to be able to help us. It's a minor setback for him. He'll get back. Hopefully, he's back around then, but he'll still need to pick up on the practice time and stuff like that, and it gives opportunities for a lot more guys."
Shanahan also addressed the status of several other injured players.
- CB Upton Stout (calf): Unable to practice Monday as hoped. The team is being cautious and hopes he can return for Thursday's joint practice against the Raiders.
- WR Jacob Cowing (hamstring): Tested well on Monday and is expected to return to practice Tuesday.
- CB Renardo Green (hamstring): Not expected to return to practice this week, contrary to earlier hopes.
- DE Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, PUP list): Likely to miss another week.
Jauan Jennings update
Additionally, Shanahan provided an update on wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who has missed much of training camp with a calf injury.
"It's something that we don't think will be too serious, but it's bothering him now," Shanahan said. "... I always want guys out there. It helps him, it helps the team. But Jauan was all right last year, too, missing some time."
The 49ers will continue monitoring these injuries as they prepare for their upcoming preseason contest against the Raiders.
