Schefter: Brock Purdy asked 49ers for $65M annually; No teams showed trade interest

The San Francisco 49ers are set to officially sign quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive contract extension this week. The two sides agreed to terms last week following a negotiation process that, although extensive, wasn't as drawn-out as some past high-profile deals.

Details of the negotiations had been kept under wraps, with both parties remaining tight-lipped throughout the process. However, the result is a landmark deal that makes Purdy one of the NFL's highest-paid players.

On Tuesday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter joined UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio and shared a revealing tidbit from the negotiations: Purdy's camp initially sought an annual salary of $65 million, which would have made the quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history.

However, Schefter isn't too surprised by the opening asking price.

"Yes, that was his initial asking price, 65," Schefter said. "But you know what? Everybody's initial asking price should be high. That's how it should be, and his was. I don't know that he thought he was going to get that, but you might as well start high. Nothing abnormal or unusual about that at all.

"And they came in where they did, where now, his total earnings in his first three seasons, he earned a combined $2.6 million. Now, he will make $2.9 million per week. So he'll make more in one week this year than he did in his first three seasons."

Purdy and the 49ers agreed to a five-year, $265 million extension, keeping the quarterback in the Bay Area through the 2030 season. The contract reportedly includes a no-trade clause.

Speaking of trades, Schefter also noted that while the two sides were still negotiating and far apart in their numbers, no teams—even the quarterback-needy ones—expressed trade interest in Purdy.

"I remember talking to teams, and just being like, 'Hey,' as they were trying to solve their quarterback needs, 'any interest in Brock Purdy?' And they were like, 'Great player, but he's a great player for them.' So they didn't see it that way. So that was the opinion of other teams."

Even if the 49ers had been open to trading Brock Purdy, there didn't appear to be much interest around the NFL, likely due to the fourth-year quarterback's pursuit of a deal that would make him one of the league's highest-paid players.
