Pro Football Focus (PFF) released its free agency grades for all 32 NFL teams, and unsurprisingly, the San Francisco 49ers received low marks. After finishing 6-11 in the 2024 season, the team remained on the sidelines during the initial wave of free-agent signings, watching other teams improve their rosters. To make matters worse, the 49ers saw several star players and fan favorites depart, leading to a significant roster overhaul.
Pro Football Focus gave the 49ers a "D" grade for their offseason efforts so far, naming only two notable additions—quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. Both signings came after the initial free-agency rush, as the 49ers aim to limit spending with quarterback Brock Purdy expected to secure one of the NFL's largest contracts soon.
Jones, a 49ers target in the 2021 NFL Draft (the team ultimately drafted Trey Lance), will serve as Purdy's backup.
"Jones was forced into action in Week 10 of the 2024 season due to Jaguars franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence's injury, and he struggled to find consistency," the Pro Football Focus team wrote. "He completed 64.8% of his passes and had eight big-time throws across his appearances, but he also racked up eight interceptions and 10 turnover-worthy plays. Barring injury, he'll likely serve as Brock Purdy's primary backup in San Francisco."
Robinson joins a receiving corps that traded away Deebo Samuel and has Brandon Aiyuk returning from ACL and MCL injuries.
"Robinson has earned a PFF grade of 65.0 or better in each of the past three seasons and is a solid fit for the 49ers offense," the Pro Football Focus team explained. "With San Francisco's loaded skill group — including its top receivers, tight end George Kittle, and running back Christian McCaffrey — he will likely be the sixth option in the passing attack. However, he has been a reliable target, dropping just two of 66 catchable passes over the past two seasons."
San Francisco's "D" grade was the lowest of any team. The Denver Broncos, who signed former 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga, received an "A" for their offseason moves. The Indianapolis Colts, who signed cornerback Charvarius Ward, received a "B," while the Kansas City Chiefs, who added tackle Jaylon Moore and running back Elijah Mitchell, received a "B-."
