Dre Greenlaw is a fan favorite known for his relentless intensity on the field. He's also beloved inside the San Francisco 49ers locker room. However, with the star linebacker set to hit free agency in a few weeks, his time in Santa Clara may be coming to an end.
Linebacker Fred Warner recently praised his longtime teammate, crediting Greenlaw for playing a significant role in his own NFL success.
"That's the guy, I feel like, that has allowed me to ascend in this league ... because of his ascension and the type of player that he is, how unselfish of a player that he is, how ferocious of a human being in a player that he is," Warner said earlier this month. "And so, people, they look at me, but you can't see me without him, so I hope we get him back."
However, one 49ers insider believes Warner's situation could actually play a role in Greenlaw's departure. Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group points out that Warner has two years remaining on his current deal and is likely in line for a contract restructure or extension—moves that could make it difficult for the 49ers to retain Greenlaw.
"An under-the-radar headache that could really impact this offseason's spending: Fred Warner's contract extension," Inman explained. "He's owed $17.7 million in salary each of the next two seasons, and the 49ers will have to do for him what they did a year ago in paying more to Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams."
Warner's cap hit is $29.2 million in 2025 and $26.7 million in 2026, according to OverTheCap.com, further complicating the team's financial decisions.
"Dre Greenlaw's future isn't directly tied to Warner's extension, but it's hard to see these 49ers also affording Greenlaw, whose health is a bigger red flag than any monetary demands," Inman added.
Meanwhile, Nick Bosa acknowledged that keeping Greenlaw is a priority for returning defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, though the defensive end understands the business side of the league.
"He's going to do what's best for him, and he should do that at this point in his career," Bosa shared at the Pro Bowl. "But obviously, we want him back, and I know Saleh is very adamant about that."
