San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy had an impressive second NFL season, throwing for a franchise-record 4,280 passing yards despite coming off offseason surgery on his throwing arm. Now, his teammates are eager to see what he can achieve in 2024 with the benefit of a full offseason.
Purdy reported to training camp looking noticeably more muscular. Although he claims to have only gained a few pounds, reporters have been impressed with his leaner, more defined physique as he prepares for the upcoming season.
"I didn't want to just bulk up and try to gain as much weight as I can," Purdy shared this week. "I was smart about it. So I've still got to move and throw well."
One of Purdy's teammates is particularly excited to see the quarterback's progress after his first full NFL offseason. Purdy was buried on the depth chart in his rookie year and had limited practice reps. Last year, he was recovering from surgery. This year, he's taken full advantage of every opportunity to improve his game.
When asked about the benefits of a full offseason for Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey told reporters, "Huge benefit. I think, obviously, the reps are important. I think it's been so impressive to see what he can do without those reps."
In addition to setting a franchise record, Purdy led the NFL with a 113.0 passer rating last season despite being unable to throw to his teammates until training camp. He still delivered one of the most impressive quarterback performances in franchise history and was integral to the team's journey to a Super Bowl appearance.
"But he looks great, he feels great, he's talking great. Just happy he's our quarterback," McCaffrey concluded.
