Last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, much of the San Francisco 49ers-related buzz revolved around the future of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Surprisingly, it wasn't Brandon Aiyuk, the next in line for a substantial contract extension, who dominated the conversations.
However, Aiyuk's future is part of the reason Samuel's name kept emerging. Following some offseason drama in 2022, San Francisco secured a contract extension with Samuel, ensuring his stay through the 2025 season. With Aiyuk's significant deal on the horizon, questions arise about the team's ability to retain both receivers in the long run.

The 49ers are financially sound for the 2024 season, having planned accordingly before the more significant impact of a potential new Aiyuk deal hits the books and before the team has to start planning for a contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy. After that, though, anything is possible.
If given the choice between Aiyuk and Samuel, the 49ers might choose Aiyuk, who has been ascending in recent years and hasn't been plagued with as many injuries as Samuel has endured. All of that has played into the chatter surrounding Samuel's future, with many believing the 49ers might opt to trade their versatile star receiver in the near future.
Samuel appeared on the "Up and Adams" show and was asked what has prompted the recent narrative surrounding his future.
"No idea," Samuel responded. "If I knew, I'd tell you."
Samuel clarified that he has not heard of such discussions from the team's management. He remains steadfast in his commitment to the 49ers through at least the remainder of his current deal. Or, at least, that's the impression he's conveying.
Samuel brushed off the rumors by adding, "That's just people getting on the internet, moving their fingers."
