Sunday's NFC Championship Game matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions should be thrilling. The home-team 49ers remain touchdown favorites over the visiting Lions, and things are trending towards star wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) playing this weekend. One former player isn't expecting to see a blowout at Levi's Stadium.
"It's not going to be as easy a game for the Niners as people probably may think because this Detroit Lions team is definitely not the team of the past," Terrell Owens said in an interview with Betway. "These guys are the real deal. They're for real. If the 49ers don't come to play, then we could be looking at the Detroit Lions heading into the Super Bowl. It's going to be a good matchup."
The 49ers earned the top seed in the NFC, backed by the arm of second-year quarterback Brock Purdy, who threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards this season and owned an NFL-leading 113.0 passer rating.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been outstanding for the Lions this season, racking up 4,575 passing yards through 17 games. So far in the playoffs, he has thrown for 564 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Owens stated of Goff, "If you look at the games that they won, it's been on the heels of the decision-making of Jared Goff."
So, who is Owens picking in this clash of NFC titans? That depends on the availability of Samuel.
"If they don't have Deebo Samuel, then I think it's going to be tough for those guys to win," Owens explained. "As you saw, they struggled last week. If they don't have Deebo Samuel, I am choosing the Detroit Lions. If they got a full roster, I am going with the 49ers. They struggled last week without him in that game. They were dead in the water for those last few minutes of the game."
Owens added, "The Detroit Lions are for real there. There are contenders. They are not any pretenders. If the Niners are not prepared and they don't play well, then the world better get ready for the Detroit Lions to be in the Super Bowl."
