While the Los Angeles Chargers are the only team that has officially requested permission to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that there is broader interest.

"I've been getting a lot of phone calls and stuff, so I know there's a lot more people interested, but you got to go through the process of formally requesting an interview, and I've only got that from the Chargers so far," Shanahan stated Tuesday via a conference call.

Shanahan confirmed that the Chargers will interview with Wilks this week. While he anticipates a virtual interview, the head coach wasn't certain about the details. He knows that this week is the best time for such a distraction.

"It just works out so well when you do have the bye week," Shanahan noted. "So now, it's a great week for him, and I think this is the only week they're allowed to talk. I'm not exactly sure of the rules anymore, but I think this is the only week they're allowed to talk. And when it comes to the teams that have the bye week, that was the only time that I talked, when I was on the bye week. So it really works out and makes it easy for both situations."

If Wilks were to leave, Shanahan would face the task of finding a new defensive coordinator for the fourth consecutive year. The 49ers previously lost defensive coordinator Robert Saleh in 2021 (Jets), offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel in 2022 (Dolphins), and defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans in 2023 (Texans).

Wilks took over from Ryans, and his defense concluded the regular season ranked eighth in yards allowed, third in points allowed, third in rushing yards allowed, and 14th in passing yards allowed.

Steve Young: 49ers' best chance at a title may have passed

By David Bonilla
May 15

Steve Young believes the San Francisco 49ers may have missed their best opportunity for the organization's sixth Super Bowl victory. It was an uphill battle for the 49ers in the playoffs, requiring two comeback victories against perceived weaker opponents before suffering an overtime defeat in Las Vegas against the Kansas City Chiefs. For various reasons, the Hall of Fame quarterback feels that it was head coach Kyle Shanahan's best opportunity to silence his critics and finally emerge victorious in the NFL title game. Now, it's too early to predict how the 2024 season will unfold. The Niners could be just as competitive as last season. They might find themselves at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, February 9, 2025, competing against

Steve Young on keeping the 49ers competitive after paying Brock Purdy

By David Bonilla
May 16

The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up to elevate quarterback Brock Purdy to their highest-paid player status starting next year. Negotiations for a contract extension with the young signal-caller, entering his third NFL season, are on the horizon. Purdy's on-field performance has far exceeded his current salary. Last season, he set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards and led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance while earning a base salary of $870,000. Even for the upcoming season, his salary will only bump up to $985,000. That may sound like a lot to the ordinary person, but it is only a fraction of the team's salary cap. However, Purdy's next contract is expected to catapult him into the ranks of the NFL's highest-paid players. That title

Former 49ers defensive player says QB Brock Purdy "is here to stay"

By Marc Adams
May 11

Logan Ryan appeared in five regular season games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, with two of those appearances in a starting role. Ryan also played in all three of the 49ers' postseason games, including the Super Bowl last February. Ryan's time with the 49ers started a little differently considering he wasn't in the league when the team called him. Ryan was on a cruise with his family when the 49ers decided they needed another defensive back. They called Ryan and before he knew it, he was on his way to Santa Clara to play for a team that almost won the Super Bowl. Last month, Ryan sat down with Keyshawn Johnson on the "All Facts No Brakes" Podcast. During the interview, Johnson asked Ryan if 49ers QB Brock Purdy is here to stay or if everyone is waiting for

49ers won't play international game during 2024 NFL season

By David Bonilla
May 15

The San Francisco 49ers escaped having to play an international game for another season. The Bay Area team won't be required to travel overseas or compete in Mexico during the 2024 season. The NFL has released its lineup of international games, and the 49ers aren't among the teams scheduled for long-distance journeys. San Francisco's last international game was in 2022, where they triumphed over the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico. Their prior overseas venture was to London in 2013, when they clinched a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. There was a chance that the 49ers might return to the United Kingdom for the 2024 NFL season. The Minnesota Vikings will host a team at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2024, and the 49ers are on their home
