49ers vs. Commanders: Chase Young “pretty hyped up” to face former team

Chase Young has been with the San Francisco 49ers for two months now, and has acclimated well to his new locker room. This Sunday, he is set to face his former team, the Washington Commanders, on the field where he spent his first three-and-a-half NFL seasons.

Despite the 49ers being 13-point favorites in the Week 16 matchup, the significance of each of the team's remaining games is heightened after Monday night's loss to the Baltimore Ravens. No one will be overlooked, not even a four-win Commanders squad riding a six-game losing streak.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Young commented, "They're definitely a team who's going to fight to the end. I do know that. So we just got to come out good."

Unlike tackle Trent Williams, who didn't hold an abundance of fond memories of his time in Washington after a 2020 trade brought him to the 49ers, Young has positive recollections, stating, "I think, over there, it's a real good locker room. I think we had fun in the locker room, for sure."

While Young's teammates acknowledge the significance of this weekend's game for the pass rusher, his former college teammate, Nick Bosa, reflected on the past two months and how much Young has progressed in his short time in Santa Clara.

"I feel like he's done an amazing job," Bosa told reporters. "I think he's gotten better each week, and he continues to get better. And this week is a huge one for him. He's already pretty hyped up about it and excited, so we're going to try and play our best game for him."

Young added, "You know it's going to be fun."

Coming off an embarrassing performance against the Ravens on Christmas night, the 49ers are eager to prove the recent setback was merely a hiccup in what has otherwise been an impressive 2023 campaign.

"I think it stinks," Bosa commented on the primetime loss. "I mean, we were so hyped up and excited for an opportunity to show the world how good we are, but I think [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] did a really good job in the team meeting today of putting it to bed and we're moving on.

"I think, when you look at it, there's a lot of silver linings. And with a team like this, how we've bounced back before and how mature of a group we are, I think it could be a benefit for us down the road here."

While the 49ers have already secured a playoff berth and the NFC West title, the next two games might be crucial in their quest to lock up the conference's top seed and home-field advantage.

"Every week is of the utmost importance," linebacker Fred Warner said. "It is the next one. But given the situation, we obviously know we've got to win these next two games to get where we're trying to go. And so that ultimately ends up [meaning] this game is everything. It doesn't matter about winning two games if you don't win the first one, right?

"This is a good football team. In the NFL, all the football teams are good. Some are in different situations than others right now, but they're going to be amped up, ready to go, just like I expect them to be. And they got really good football players, so we got to show up and play our best ball."

Former 49ers player seemingly calls out team for being "afraid to let guys compete"

By Marc Adams
May 4

It's not uncommon for a player to be frustrated with his lack of playing time. The San Francisco 49ers have their share of players who complained, usually after leaving the team, about how they were underused or weren't given the opportunities to showcase their skills. You can add former 49ers wide receiver Willie Snead IV to that list. On Friday, Snead shared his frustration on social media, writing, "All I want is to go back to a team that isn't afraid to let guys compete for a roster spot. These last 3 years been nothing short of entitlement…Competition breedz Champions." It's unclear what Snead was referring to when he said the past three years were "nothing short of

What Steve Young expects of 49ers QB Brock Purdy in 2024

By David Bonilla
Apr 30

Last season, Brock Purdy proved that his rookie campaign was no fluke. In his second NFL season, the young quarterback threw for a single-season franchise-record 4,280 passing yards despite coming off surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. Purdy led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and the team is expected to be a contender again in the 2024 season. Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Tuesday morning to discuss Purdy's future in the NFL. Has the young signal-caller reached his potential yet? Young believes that is the wrong question. The NFL great already categorizes Purdy as one of the best processors in the league. "What you've seen him do, I don't know that you can get significantly

Steve Young shares thoughts on 49ers' WR situation, O-line

By David Bonilla

Steve Young shared his insights on the San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver situation and offensive line during a recent appearance on Bay Area radio station KNBR. Heading into the 2024 NFL Draft, there was speculation about potential trades involving top wideouts Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel. However, despite rumors swirling across the league, no deals materialized. Aiyuk and Samuel remain on the roster, but doubts linger about their long-term presence, especially after wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was selected with the No. 31 overall pick. Aiyuk is due a contract extension, and Samuel is already among the highest-paid players at the position. Keeping both on the roster beyond the upcoming season might prove challenging, especially with quarterback Brock Purdy

Former NFL QB makes bold statement about 49ers' Brock Purdy

By David Bonilla
May 2

Brock Purdy's standing in the hierarchy of NFL quarterbacks remains a contentious topic. While many argue that the San Francisco 49ers' signal-caller deserves a place near the top of quarterback rankings, others contend that Purdy is merely a game manager or a beneficiary of head coach Kyle Shanahan's system. Regardless of these debates, one thing seems increasingly likely: Purdy will become the highest-paid player on the 49ers' roster next offseason and will skyrocket toward the top of the NFL's highest-paid players, especially if he turns in another season like his record-breaking 2023 campaign. Purdy has found a believer in former NFL quarterback turned analyst Chase Daniel, a 14-year veteran of the league. "Brock Purdy is a top 3 or 4 quarterback
