If you ask Brock Purdy, the only thing on the San Francisco 49ers' radar is their next opponent, as the team remains singularly focused on its season goal—winning a championship. To do that, the 49ers can't look beyond the task at hand. For now, that's the Arizona Cardinals.
Despite maintaining this mindset, it would undoubtedly be a significant honor for the second-year quarterback, who has faced the skepticism of numerous doubters, to win the league's MVP award. After last week's dominating victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, Purdy emerged as the betting frontrunner for the annual honor. However, that was short-lived, as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has overtaken him.
While Purdy may have lost the MVP frontrunner status, the 49ers continue to secure victories and are in the driver's seat for the top seed and home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs. They are coming off a 28-16 win over the division-rival Seattle Seahawks.
Purdy is coming off another superb game, passing for a career-high 368 yards and completing over 70 percent of his passes for the seventh consecutive game—an achievement not seen since Joe Montana's eight-game streak in 1989.
When recently asked about everything he has accomplished in his sophomore NFL season, Purdy responded, "Playing in the NFL, winning some games, you do have to, I think, take a step back and be able to look at it and be thankful for what's going on. But obviously, we have a bigger goal in mind, and that's where I have to stay even-keeled and keep chipping forward."
Nevertheless, Prescott's Dallas Cowboys are coming off an impressive win of their own, beating the Eagles 33-13 in primetime on Sunday night. Prescott leads the league with 28 touchdowns this season, including two against Philadelphia, helping him claim the top spot in the MVP race.
While it's tough to argue that Prescott is having a better season than Purdy, playing for one of the most high-profile teams in all of sports seemingly has its privileges.
